Button Up or Button Down

So me and the missus have been having a discussion on whether the proper way to button your fly is up or down.
I go from top down, she buttons from the bottom up. She thinks my way looks awkward, i think her way looks stupid.
So what is the correct protocol on this?

bottom up of course, if you do it the other way around your not leaving much space to do the last button.
