Putting a normal sized car radio in a newfangled dash

So, I got myself an avensis recently, not the new model, but the old shape. The radio is kinda integrated into the dash, as it is in most modern cars. If one wanted to could it be replaced by a normal radio ? Would this involve something daft like taking a jigsaw to the dash above the gear stick ?
Reason for this is that the current radio is just cd/tape, and Im used to the mp3 cd / aux in deck i used to have in my banger. Id be quite happy if there was some way to put a line in on the existing radio. I have a tape thingy alright, but the quality isnt all that, and those fm transmitters never really impressed me either. On top of all that, is it possible to use the steering wheel remote with another radio ?

And yes, I know it would be ugly, so its more than likely that i`ll stick with what i have, but its good to explore options.

Why not try and source a cd player from another car. I am sure you could get something like that on ebay somewhere.

Not sure about the avensis but you can usually get facia plates to hold the radio and cover any gap. Your best bet is probably a toyota dealer. I'd be suprised if it was more than 20 squid

you can get an ipod intergration kit for the 03-09 Avensis, you can use the steering wheel controls and you don't ruin the look of the dash,

they're also available for the VVT-i/D-4D facelift model of the original Avensis. but as you said you have a casette/CD then you're talking about 03-06 model Avensis.
