    Okay, I've a Breitling Avenger - automatic movement, 28 jewels (I think).

I've had it for the guts of six years and it's served me well. However in the last couple of months, I've noticed it losing time (about five to ten minutes a week, on average).

More worryingly, it's begun to stop during the night when I don't have it on, and no amount of shaking it to wind the spring fixes this.

Anyway, I've been meaning to get it serviced for about a year now, but have had more important things to spend my money on (got married last August).

Anyway, went to the jeweler that I bought it off a week or two ago, and was told it would cost between 350 to 550 euro to service! Not good news in these recession-ish times!

I had been expecting it to cost about 200 euro.

Anyways, does anybody know if you can deal with the factory directly, or (riskier), is it an idea to let a reputable jeweler to service it?

TBH I have heard a lot worse pricing than that in this country, especially for chronos, but yep a big problem here are the prices charged. A worse problem can be the quality or level of service regardless of prices. I once asked a well known jeweler here how much for a non chrono service like that and they described it as a full restoration:rolleyes: and wanted the guts of a grand.

Now as it's a chronograph the service costs are going to be higher, a fact often left out by sales types. I used to send mine to the states for services. Now these were full stripdown services too and even if balance work was needed it would still be cheaper than what you were quoted. Now these were all non chronos and AFAIR even in the states the chronos were a lot more pricey, obviously because of the complication involved. I've also sent mine to Spain of all places and again much much cheaper than here.

Hopefully someone hereabouts knows a chap or chapesse that they would recommend.

PS a lot of the shops farm out the work, so if you go direct you take out the retailers cut. It's finding out about these guys is the trick though.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.
