the stanstead express train will get you on to the underground network in about 45 mins

the first stop with a underground connection is tottenham hale or you could go all the way to liverpool st

afaik it costs around £18 but you can get cheaper tickets onboard with ryanair

You can buy your Stansted Express Tickets for the Ryanair onboard price before you go at this link. It is worthwhile doing because sometimes they don't manage to get through the whole plane offering tickets before landing and I have seen people being refused sale of the tickets once the plane has landed.

It is a very easy route, the station is downstairs just outside the terminal building and is well signposted as you come into arrivals. You can get off at either Tottenham Hale or Liverpool Street, both of which give you acess to the underground network. It takes about 45 minutes to Liverpool Street and about 35 to Tottenham Hale. I would normally get off at Tottenham Hale because it is a quieter station and gives you good access into Central London.

If you book online, through the link provided, the cost is £21.50 for a return ticket on the Express (£15 for a single).

You can get to Shepherd's Bush quite easily from both Stations... it shares the Central Line (which is the Red one) with Liverpool Street so is direct in that regard or if you get off at Tottenham Hale get on the Victoria Line Southbound (light blue and the only line which goes through the Station) as far as Oxford Circus and swap onto the Central Line there.

If money is tight you could always fly to Gatwick as there are local trains that serve between the Airport and London and they are much cheaper than the Express service, though only a few minutes longer. It will bring you in at Victoria Station which provides really just as easy access to where you want to be.

If you havent already booked I would try and avoid Stansted. Tickets, even when bought onboards are north of 26 pounds and the Stansted Express takes an age to get to Liverpool St-45-50 min, compared to 35min on the local "Southern" trains from Gatwick-Victoria Station and costing around 20pounds return.

The respective train company websites have the exact details.

The trip to Shepards Bush would be about the same from each station,London Tube map will tell you all.
