What I don't like about British hip hop is that they sound like they're trying too hard.

Seems weird to me that in most other genres the best stuff gets recognised, whereas in this genre there is better stuff that's unknown.

In this genre the best stuff gets recognised all the time but only by the people who know, which suits me down to the ground, the majority of hip hop when exposed to main stream media and main stream media demands gets destroyed.

Could you give me an example?

Actually, the most recongnisable stuff in pretty much every genre is usually the most mediocre, unimaginative stuff. So it is with Hip-Hop, indie, metal and so on.

Before i go any further ill say that it very often gets destroyed by the actual artist, and of course its only my opinion....

Kanye.... Real hip hop heads new about kanye for years, way back when he was producing Jay z beats along side NO I.D,the main stream got a load of kanye and now kanye is destroyed (to me)

Eminem....Again REal hip hop heads were appreciating Em for some time, for every mainstream hit he has had there was an underground B side or guest appearance to back it up on the likes of sound bombing etc (that shady fans will now know about but only because **** DJs bring out a million mixtapes with stupid titles like sim shady unrealesed,or slim shady the mixtape or slim shady rare shiz...) as a result i wouldn't cross the road to see the man.

its late and my brain is slowing so im all out of examples for now!

Some UK stuff is really good.

Durrty Goodz is playing twisted pepper on friday, will be one of the best hiphop gigs in Ireland this year.

Really don't think I'd agree. Indie is pretty much meritocratic, alright there are ****e abberations like Coldplay and U2, but even though they are ****e they have 'presence' if you get me. But generally anytime you get a band that think they are complex and enigmatic and they are unrecognised they are probably a bit ****e.

Joy Division, Nirvana, Smiths, Mondays, Charlatans, Weller, Oasis, Verve, Tom Petty, Dylan, Iggy, AC/DC, Jim Croce, Cat Stevens etc etc. Most of my fav artists are all big enough tbh. JJ Cale isn't so much cos he didn't give a hit but he still got big enough.
As for hip-hop, how would you rate recognised artists Mobb Deep, Wu-Tang, Public Enemy, Dr Dre? Unimaginative or the bollocks?

Mobb deeps first album is virtually unknown to the outside world, real hip hop heads like it though, their second album The infamous is a hip hop gem simple as.

Wu tang - even after the release of their enter the 36 chambers were only really recognised only by proper hip hop heads it wasn't until the released the likes of triumph and the jump off etc that the really blew up and people then started to look backwards for enter the wu.The very same applies for Nas too illmatic was as underground as it got when first released esp outisde of the US and in this country in particular.

Dr dre - Who remembers the world class wreckin crew? real hip hop heads do.

Public enemy - PE were knocked, ridiculed and scorned for their 1st two albums,no one in the main stream knew or cared about them, rock heads would laugh and snigger when you said you liked PE,but in the last 10 years their old albums have become super cool to like with the likes of michael stype etc naming them as classics in thier own collections, the result is a nephew woh never cared coming up to me and asking me for a copy of "it takes a nation of millions"

I like braintax's stuff, can relate to his viewpoints on lots of the social & political stuff he raps about.

Plenty of UK Hip-Hop/Rap that is decent. Rooty Toot Manuva would be at the forefront, IMHO. Also DJ Yoda would be well worth a mention, while not a rapper he would mos def (see what I did there!!!) be hip-hop. Big Dada would be a pretty decent label for UK Hip-Hop.

Also to be strictly correct MF Doom is also from the UK but might not be considered to be UK Hip-Hop.

MF Doom only lived there for the first year or two of his life. Wouldn't really class that. Slick Rick had a fair UK twang to his vocals, and he was ****ing brilliant.

Like every country there's lots of good and lots of bad UKHH. If we're going to class it as something distinct from Grime then I'd say my favourite emcee is Stig Of The Dump. He's a ridiculous freestyler, battler and when I met him in real life a fantastically nice fellow to hang out with.

As far as Grime is concerned I like Wiley, Ghetto, Goodz and quite a few others. It's such a good genre. I love the frenzied drum and base toasting style delivery. It really feels very distinct from hip hop emceeing.
