Some photos from today's spin, Emty and myself are in the Sierra Nevada for a week. Only 70km but around 1,400m climbing. Last climb of the day was a solid 700m up. The descents are very good, excellent road surfaces and tearing around hairpins the order of the day. Quite hot, we are a bit sunburnt now. Hope to do a bit longer tomorrow. We will be dead by the end of the week.

EDIT: Just to add, we are over here with Vamos Cycling on Barrabus' reccomendation (he was over in January.) They are great husband and wife team and have made us feel very welcome in their lovely house in Cádiar.

Good one lads ... looks beautiful ...

I am only green because of the extra veggies I had with lunch. Nothing to do with jealousy

    Too bad about the sunburn.

Your timing sucks. Just as you left, a high pressure system brought warm winds from sub-Sarahan Africa, and the Wicklow mountains are bathed in glorious sunshine. All the snow is gone, and it's like southern spain but with less UV and decent beer.

    honestly though, that looks fantastic

yes guys looks awesome. Such awesome weather. Is horrible here today very very windy and horrid rain. Happy to know you guys are having it good -- the weather looks fantastic.

    Are Vamos suggesting your routes?

Yes, indeed, they are escorted- Gary is taking us around himself (orange jersey.) He is a bit of a savage going up the hills and is really putting me through my paces trying to hang on to his wheel.

On top of that great food (breakfast, lunch (more than one today :)) and drink all included. Dinner is a bit extra but was delicious last night. Plenty of it all which is what you want while cycling!

I generally get on OK with sunburn, as long as it doesn't start peeling it goes brown the next day. Will suncream myself tomorrow.

We will keep you all updated, hopefully it will be spring when we get back.

Could also dowith cycling in shorts and a short sleeve jersey for a chang.

Looks like perfect cycling conditions and location! Are the uphill slopes steep?

Today's effort, 100km with just over 2,000m climbing :) Was all either up or down, there were no real flat bits.

@Hurin- not ultra-steep (yet) but they are long compared to Wicklow, you can get a good 7% that goes on for many kilometers. Max I think I have seen has been around the 11% mark (not sustained.) So far, probably very slightly steeper than the Alps but the climbs are shorter. The road surface definitely makes climbing a lot easier.

Today's effort, 70km with ~1,500-1,650m climbing (rounded/Garmin.) A quick 400m climb we have done a few times now followed by a 1,000m fast descent over ~18km. Half way down I got stuck behind a car doing the speed limit :( so stopped to get a short of emty descending (first photo.)

This left us at 300m altitude and so next step was a climb straight back up the other side, another 18km and another 1,000m elevation gain. We cycled up through the clouds and came out over them. I was getting very worried by emty on this one, I had dropped back while he was keeping pace with Gary and nearly had me on it. I had to lighten myself of all excess liquid both on the bike and elsewhere and then set off in pursuit; just caught him with the last 100m climbing to go. I have given up trying to catch Gary. A bit of undulation with just one 120m climb followed before the familiar 400m drop back to Cadiar.

I know what Pipas are but not sure about the Maiz- some sort of corn thing? The 5 tonnes of chocolate is a coming-back-from-France thing, not sure I will source same here. I am out of salty Lindt unfortunately, could do with some more.

Haha, if you think that is bad you should see me on the way up the climbs, everything is hanging out! Today was a bit shorter, just over 50km, but with ~1,250m climbing (not sure exactly as my Garmin altimeter has gone wobbly again) including a 800m which got nasty steep towards the top. Three new cyclists have just arrived from England so I may head out again after lunch :)

Seriously, the climbing is tough, it's like the Alps, but hotter... IIRC only one boardsie managed a century over there :D Plan another long one for Friday, should finish us off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,995 ✭✭✭✭blorg

Added on another 22km after lunch including the 400m climb we have done a few times now. 1,650m climbing today. Hope that satisfies.

No, not really. Better head out again and report back with something more impressive, un siglo por favor!

Took it a bit easy today, 70km with a bit over 1,000m of climbing. Tomorrow is our last day, hopefully we will bring the weather home with us. Emty is getting a lot better at descending.

@Planet X- not the people in Pro Cycling, no.

Yep, good weather here alright! I headed out yesterday with full finger gloves, shoe covers, leg warmers, tights, jacket, thermo top etc... but I managed to take off the warmers and jacket mid cycle! Lovely feeling, not so nice white legs though! :p
Today I headed out with no shoe covers, no jacket, no legwarmers, only my fingerless gloves, shorts, thermo top, jersey, shorts and shoes! Lovely temperatures alright, I can't wait until it gets a bit more consistant and also the longer evenings! :D

You must live some where else. I was out yesterday for 130km wearing shorts, a base layer top and a ss jersey. I did get cool and put on my gilet but apart from that I was grand.

Last day today and it was a tough one, we went above the snow line with a 125km spin, around 2,800m climbing. Three main climbs the main one being over 1,500m ascent, this was worse than anything we did in the Alps in October. Descent was brilliant, dropped 1,000m in a bit over 10 minutes. I am looking forward, like I never have before, to not cycling my bike tomorrow :) Great holiday, great hosts, I would thoroughly recommend it.

+1 the day I rode up to Porto De la Ragua I had Sarah doing support in the car as gary was back the road with another client.
Unreal service Sarah was taking photos of me, handing me cans of coke, taking my jacket when i was too hot, giving it back when I was too cold, doing lead car when the cloud closed in leaving very poor visibility to protect me from on coming traffic ..
