is there any way to get (dark-ish) brown hair to be lighter, in preparation for getting blonde highlights?

as i want a full head of blonde highlights but dont want the kind of inbetween colour, so was wondering is there is anything you can get in the chemist or something to make your hair lighter, so the bleach (from salon) turns out nicer and more blonde?

    (im probably making no sense)

It's not a good idea to put in a DIY colour because it might react badly with the salon highlights. It is possible for the hairdresser to tint your hair and then highlight it.
You should pop into a salon and ask about this.

Is the brown your natural colour? If it is then the hair stylist shouldn't have a problem with getting it from a medium brown to blond in one go. There should'nt be an inbetween stage. If your hair is brassy after getting the highlights just ask them to put a toner in it to eliminate the brassiness.

If your hair has previously been died then a really good way of lightening it is to use head and shoulders shampoo for about 2 weeks, It stips the colour so the bleach will take a lot better to you hair. Another way is to wash with washing up liquid but that leaves your hair feeling horrible.

not sure where your getting your info from...... but shampooing the hair will not strip the colour from your hair. If it is a semi then shampooing will make that colour gradually fade away. If it's permanent then still it wont strip the colour is will fade but you will never get rid of it all or get even results. As for the fairy liquid.... well i'm lost for words!!!!!!

As for the original question..... if your hair is natural at the moment there is no reason why you shouldn't get lovely results from the salon without doing anything yourself to it. Box colours are only good if you intent on using them all the times, using them and going to the salons isn't the best idea.

If your hair is already coloured then the stylist can do one of 2 things, she will know when she see's your hair. If you have a lot of colour (especially dark colour) on your hair then she might strip your hair first ( for the record stripping you hair is using bleach, peroxide, shampoo and water in equal amounts. Not just washing you hair with head and shoulders, no one with coloured hair would ever use their products again ) Some will call it a bleach wash instead of stripping. Personally i dont like doing this to hair and very rarely do. The other option is to go ahead with the bleach and lift your hair as much as possible, and depending on your results you might need a semi or a toner on over that. You might find your hair takes very well to colour/bleach, my hair has been from blonde to dark and back again about a 1000 times and i've never needed to do anything with my hair before hand when it was dark to get it to blonde again, apart from using treatments to keep my hair healthy, but everyone with coloured/bleached hair should do that.

Hope it turns out well for you.

Fairy liquid and head and shoulders are well known for being good at fading hair colour! I've been recommended it by several hairdressers (obviously use a deep conditioner after the fairy liquid...).

Are you a hairdresser? And you don't know that this technique works?

yea my hair is bottled brown (i just dont see the point in paying loadss for the hairdresser to dye my hair brown when i can do it myself, and get nice natural looking results 90% of the time, for like a tenner)

if the colour is a semi or a quasi than any shampoo will fade the colour, cause they will only last a certain amount of washes. Permanent colour is totally different it will fade at different rates over the hair, your'll never get a permanent colour out of your hair completly from using shampoo.

As for the fairy liquid... the poster said she was geting hightlights, in my opinion anyone putting bleach on their hair should not use fairy liquid first, even with conditioning treatments it will wreck your hair!! If you had a major disaster at home and couln't go to a salon then maybe use it if you wern't planning on re dying your hair. Everyone has their own little tricks i personally would never use fairy liquid on my hair and i wouldn't advise anyone to either.

you dont need to get your hair to light brown first before the highlights are done. Putting more colour on your hair before bleaching is going to make it harderto lift. The bleach will lift the colour that is already in your hair. It wont cost any extra at the salon. Your getting a full head of highlights anyway so most of the dark brown in your hair will be gone.

If it does turn out a bit brassy like someone mentioned then most salons wont charge for the toner. Some will so ask beforehand.
