Lacquer coming off Audi A4 boot..WTF ??

Any ideas on this ? Was fitting a lip spoiler to the boot of my Audi A4 yeaterday. I laid out a template with a roll of insulation tape I had. Remove the tape and a section of clearcoat came with it ! I know that it has not been painted before. Strange or what ????
Anyway, I'm thinking that it would just need to sanded and re-lacquered as the bascoat seems fine. Am I correct with this ?

And if anybody could reccomend a reliable finisher in Dublin ?

    Cheers

Cant say i'd have used insulating tape myself, masking tape for paint ;)
From what I remember lacquer does not like other lacquer once hardened so probably looking at a total respray of boot i'd say, but open to correction

just one thing to check.... she might have been in an accident at some stage?? might be worth checking out...

If this was me, I would remove the bootlid completely, strip it down, badges, trim etc, and have it completelysanded and re-laqured, the result will be well worth the extra effort,.....

I've never heard of original lacquer lifting off with tape, are you sure it was never re-painted? Either way I suspect you are looking at a respray I'm afraid.

What year is the car as there may still be a paint warranty you could claim off, provided it has not been painted before.

sounds like it was resprayed. Are you sure you would you know if it had been?

Yep. I'm pretty certain it has never been touched. The fact that I'm fitting the lip spoiler, I was thinking that just a sanding & re-lacquer on the top of the boot section might be sufficient ?

Can't see how the import bit is relevant KF, Irish cars get resprayed too.

dodzy, unless you really know what you're looking at and know what to look out for, you may not notice a respray - no offence intended. A factory job shouldn't peel like that.
