usually a big petrol engine in a car like the 5 series would be attached to an automatic box as they are preferred. Any particular reason you want a manual as the auto's are quite good

Automatics just not my thing. Tried a few automatic diesels though which were okay. With a petrol just seems wrong. Budget is 12k maybe more is a really nice one pops up. Not much I know.

should get a decent e39 with that easily. If it was a 520 there'd probably be loads, its just people that bought 530i's tended to get well spec'd cars and auto was a must for resale. You might find a couple of 525's with manuals maybe

Have you driven an auto petrol BMW? I have a manual & an auto outside the door & I go for the auto every time (well almost every time)

Also are you looking in the UK too? It might provide you with more options.

I honestly haven't maybe just being unduly prejudiced against them. Buying in the UK is an option but the VRT is still fairly high on some models. I'm checking the VRT calculator nightly!

If the VRT is working out on the high side remember that you can challenge the amount. However you have to pay the big amount & then subsequently do the challenge.
If you show that the amount they quote the OMSP to be is high they will be fair.

    Go for the auto!

This car doesn't look fantastic in these pics but the dealer has told me he'll let it go for €4k as he wants to clear out the bigger stuff he's got.

    P.S. - I'm sure that's supposed to read 100,000k!!!

A bit pedantic but that car is not a sport, it has the Sport wheels but that's definitely an SE front & rear bumper

I thought there was something different about it alright. Set of M tech bumpers wouldn't go astray!

It would also need the old sport springs to get it down an inch too.;)
