GAA on Sky/Setanta

    Hello

    So here is my query

I currently have the basic Sky package

I am a big GAA fan

What I want to do is to get Setanta Ireland ONLY via my sky box

All I want is Setanta Ireland, I dont want Setanta 1, Setanta 2, Setanta news etc.

    Here are my questions :

    1. Do I ring sky to get this ?

    2. Do I ring setanta to get this ?

    3. Can I get just Setanta Ireland ( without all the other channels above ) ?

    4. Do I have to enter a contract for a year etc. ?

    5. Can I just do it on a per game basis. e.g. If there is a GAA game on Sunday, can I just ring up Setanta or Sky and get Setanta Ireland live for that game and then its gone again when game finished ?

    6. The cost of teh service depending on above

Sorry for all the questions and variables, but if anyone could help that would be great

I think you need to tell us where you live and whether you have a UK or Irish Sky Card. Please correct me if I am wrong but due to 'rights' issues GAA live games on Setanta maybe blocked using an Irish Skycard.

Update! Galway v Tyrone is currently live on Setanta Ireland on my Irish Card. Will have to wait a few months to see if the same applies to the championship.

I will just add my update again as it looks like you will have missed it.

Derry v Kerry is live tomorrow.

    Foggy

So the Galway Dublin match is on now for you

And you did not ask for this to be done or ring sky / setanta etc. ?

I rang Setanta and they asked for my Skycard number. I have been with Setanta a few years now.

Most people have this Saturday Setanta 3pm live soccer issue. If you have an Irish Skycard you will get it and if you have a UK Skycard you will not. This doesn't appear to bother you.

You need to keep up to date on rights issues. Something I do not. What I have noticed is that Setanta are showing a lot of live floodlight hurling and football games now.

hi no you wont be able to watch the championship matches during the summer well not live might have replays not sure, rte/tv3 have those rights.

Setanta have uk rights for gaa championship during the summer

setanta have rights to some national league matches

ok so, thanks for all the replies

I know the championship is mainly guaranteed to RTE/TV3

Im just worried about the few league games that are owned by setanta

AFAIK Setanta Ireland is part of the Setanta Pack on Sky, unlike on UPC where Setanta Ireland is part of the basic package.

You should contact the GAA. I don't think an amateur community association should have sold the rights to setanta.

It s because RTE have no interest in showing league games(hence why tg4 have games). I'm quite glad setanta show these as if rte did have the rights they'd probably just show highlights instead of setanta showing 3/4 games each weekend..

Did TG4 not have all of the rights before Setanta took the rights?

Also what about TV3, people seem to forget that they are a FTA channel and a national one at that.

They did. And the thanks they got from the GAA for developing and expanding live coverage of league matches, was to have the rights of the nighttime games sold to Setanta. So much for rule 4.

The bullsh*t line the GAA came out with at the time, was that they felt "comfortable" doing a deal with Setanta because they were an Irish company. Nicely glossing over the fact that in order to view Setanta means part of the subscription ends up in either Murdoch's or UPC's pockets.

Setanta on Sky Digital is completely seperate to Sky. Sky get none of the money that Setanta make through subscriptions.

    Murdoch does via NDS.

The yawnsome internet cult of hatred that's developed for things that are owned by a company that's owned by Murdoch strikes again.

Fact is, almost no one cares one single bit whether their money goes to a company with a billion dollar turnover or another one with a million dollar turnover.

But Setanta does have to pay to be on the EPG in the first place too, so of course some of the money goes to bSkyb.

Your are right but do you think that we are all that interested in the Murdock Family's hate of the BBC and their view that everything including ITV should be run by a Murdock?

    *Murdoch

Yes, because if Murdoch owned ITV it'd ruin all it's fatastic programming (!!) and brilliant HD service (!!). It's doubious how muc of the above is internet rumours/scare mongering and how much has real basis i reality or active action to undermine the BBC.

Honestly though, I'm not fond of Murdoch, but nor am I fond of any media moguls.

Alot of the things News Coporation have their fingers in are fantastic, especially a big chunk of the scripted shows FOX and FX US produce.
The Times still is easily one of the best newspapers in the world, even if some control was exerted by Murdoch.

Sky News is a pretty damn good news station, truth be told.
Fox News, on the other hand, is the most entertaining news station ever devised. I don't simply mean as ironic 'hohoho' laughing at them entertaining, but as a format it is captivating in a very real sense. It's sensationalist and brash, but in alot of ways that's more indictive of the American spirit than something invented by Murdoch - he saw a market for a right wing cable news station, and ratings have proved him to be spectacularly correct. You can effectively argue how it is biased (but check out NBC for a look at how the American left has almost wholesale copied the Fox format) and how in many cases it's not really journalism, but that's the point of alot of cable news stations - to make their target audiences feel they are right, because if someone's telling you that you are right then you're going to come back again and again for more.

If any of that flew over anyone's head, God bless you for not thinking about it as much as I have.

    Don't correct my spelling. FFS.

Fox News V CNBC which is more right wing ??? mmmmm!

As for Sky News it is braindead. TBH I don't know of any really really worthwhile Dramas from Fox in the last say 5 years, I love 24 but it is OTT. Sorry House too, I didn't realize it was FOX.

I know I over use this but here you go (Hugh Laurie = Sell out :) ): -

Problem with ITV over the last 10 years has its insistence in dumbing down to a Sky ONE level. To a lesser extent BBC could be accused of the same.

    Don't correct my spelling. FFS..

You said 'Murdock' twice, indicating you've been calling him that for an extended peroid of time. Would you rather you continued to do so in ignorance?

Fox News V CNBC which is more right wing ??? mmmmm!

I am not being facetious when I say this. Do you understand the poltical spectrum? Or what I said?

The right wing is ''conversative'', the left wing is ''liberal''. They are rather lazy monickers, but they'll serve their purpose here.

I said Fox News was right wing; that NBC (the full on US MSNBC news, not the international variant of CNBC, the business news station of NBC's that is on Sky) is left wing in the simliarily overt manner.

Right wing isn't an insult, nor is left wing an embelm of correctness.

I clearly prefixed talking about MSNBC as being the 'American left' equvilent of Fox News.

The suggestion I was saying MSNBC was right wing means you clearly didn't understand a) what was said about MSNBC or b) didn't know what 'right wing' means.

So no, I was not being facetious.
