tg4 irish subtitles

can some one tell me, for the love of god, how or can tg4 have irish subtitles up on the screen?


although my irish is fairly fluent, when the subtitles are there, i seem to read them without wanting to and even trying not to.

Plus, my irish would probaly improve vastly if i could see the words written down, grammar and the likes wise.

I would like the option of Irish subtitles -P889? (for Irish language content) just so as to know what was actually being said! Translating is a different issue.
As a learner it's useful to see the written version of the spoken word.

I think the same could be said for many programmes on RTE in general, a second language set of subtitles would be much appreciated!

yes very much so - rté etc would be a bonus - but surely to god tg4 can have it

the cost would be fairly minimal really - considering they have and use subitles in english on all their shows

and translation - well it would actualy be more like transcription actualy would be fairly easy

You raise a good point Conchubar1. They are indeed very helpful to learners.

I use Ros na Rún a good bit to help with my Irish. Sure, you may question the integrity of the show as a dramatic work! It's only a soap after all.

However, the thing is - a soap opera is a very effective way of picking up vocab and phrases as they deal with a wide variety of themes and it revolves around everyday speech - in contrast with, let's say, a documentary on astronomy, which would be full of esoteric vocabulary and of little use to a learner looking for everyday phrases.

Anyway- back on point - there are English subtitles with Ros na Rún in the broadcast. But if you put on teletext as you watch and go to page 888, you get Irish language subtitles. Very helpful indeed. They scroll well and are pretty much the characters' script verbatim.

Unfortunately, this teletext facility is only available with the TV broadcasts. On the website, the archive shows are English subtitles only - www.tg4.tv.

Poll Dubh

Besides Ros na Rún the only other show I know had 888 subtitles was South Park. Mystery to me why TG4 doesn't promote that this service is available at the start of the show.
