Both photos just look like snaps taken on a night out, then worked heavily in photoshop to be made look like portraits. This results in quite a few problems, but key ones I see are:

    #1
    - the square looking thing (a light or something) is distracting
    - his glasses are crooked and off-putting

    #2
    - the softening you've appled is too much
    - if you highlight jewellery, make sure you don't also do the skin around it
    - flash is distracting on her glasses

At this stage I'd suggest if you want to take some portrait photos of your friends, then take some time to set it up.

well they ARE snaps from a night out and they ARE photoshopped (to death?)

But thank you for the too much softening and sharpening comments.
