i have a volvo s40 2.0tdi, a 06 model. the 2 year warranty has expired an its due a service. i had always brought the car to a volvo garage(dublin) which was required during the warranty period for servicing which cost me 400-500 euros each time for a standard service, no brake pads or anything extra, which i feel is a bit too expensive.

what i want to know is if i could bring the car to any reputable garage for a service or would i really need to keep bringing it to a volvo garage for a proper service. can any run of the mill garage service my car properly?

    Like €200 too expensive.
Did you get a receipt, it should show the costs for time & material.
    Maybe you could post it.

I think that you'll get better answers in the Motors forum.

You were not required to have the car serviced at volvo at any stage durimg the warranty period. To ensure your warranty was not affected, you simply had to have the car serviced by a vat registered garage who followed the service schedule for the car and used original quality parts and oils.

Jasus Mick you've changed your tune, yesterday when I suggested that another poster on the forum, do what you have suggested above, I was apparently the biggest whinging c*nt on boards for making that suggestion!

Also, for your information there is no legal requirement pursuant to EU block exemption rules that stipulates that a garage must be VAT registered as you have stated above. The requirement to register for VAT is set out in the Taxes Consolidation Act 1997, (as ammended by annual Finance Acts based on the budget), it is a function of financial turnover in respect of trading activity and nothing else.

OP, as per EU block exemption rules, you are entitled to have your servicing and maintenance requirements met by a provider of your choice, provided that certain conditions are met, specifically that the parts used are of OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) quality and that the person carrying out the work on your vehicle is a competent tradesperson.

EU rules stipulate that your warranty, legally CANNOT be effected or disturbed, once you use OEM quality parts and a competent tradesperson, and you enjoy these entitlements from the very day you drive your new car out of the showroom.

Obviously Volvo don't want you to know this, because if you did, you probably wouldn't be paying them 500 Euro a service to preserve and defend your perceived warranty entitlements.
