Mixing - Headphones vs Monitors

Just thought I'd throw this question out, I make deep House/Techno and find that when mixing, my levels change pretty dramatically, ie - when using the monitors as reference a synth channel is much higher compared to using the headphones as reference. If I do 2 mixs, one of each and burn them to cd, the headphone mix always sounds better, as in the levels of the channels are accurate. I also find headphones are much better for judging my fx levels, with monitors I find you can overdo it. I use good sennheiser sp25 hp's, monitors are behringer, maybe thats the problem. So basicly I write a track using the monitors and then when I have all the elements written I switch to the hp's and tweak everything with my MPC and start making a song and then mix everything on my desk. Just wondering what other peoples views/experiences/thoughts would be, cheers.

sounds like you've a combination of terrible monitors and worse room problems. only real explanation for headphone mixes sounding better.

however, there are those who can actually mix really well on headphones.
do you do most of your music listening on headphones? (ipods etc.)

If so, that could be your explanation.
Also you mightn't 'know' the sound of your monitors as well as you know your headphones.

I'd say your right, not a proper studio space so I think I'll stick to the headphones for the moment, I do listen to an ipod quite a bit now that you mention it.

I would much rather mix if forced on a good set of headphones rather than a bad set of speakers in a bad room :)
