so. this is a strange problem - guy has got new charger, so charger is not problem. when he plugs in charger, it doesn't say plugged in charging as it should, it shows the battery at 3% with 149 minutes remaining and it remains at that all the time with charger in and charger out. The battery light also on the laptop is flashing, it's very weird. Has anyone every seen anything like this before?

It's a Dell Inspirom 9400. Obviously, I's like to find another battery to test to see if it is the battery that is causing, but that's easier said than done. Anyone got any suggestions?

check if it says PA 10 on it

it may be the same as for a D800
most recent dell chargers have 3 connectors
the outside of the cylinder is -
the insids surface of the cylinder is +
and the thin pin in the centre is for DATA so the PC can ID which charger is in use and reject ones it doesn't like

I didn't know that. What would happen if the pin was broken? I assume it would still charge but would give that error saying that it can't recognise the charger.

Some Dell latitudes that take a 90W power supply will get snotty when you put in a 65W one. Some allow you to press F3 to bypass the warning. For others you have power up the laptop and only plug in the adaptor when in windows.

Yeah it should still charge the battery , but sometimes it might not boot up if a lower power adaptor is in place

Sounds like the battery. Check it's status in the BIOS. If the laptop runs OK without the battery then it's either charging system or battery - battery is the cheapest to test/replace.
