Seat Leon Spark Plugs

Hi guys, my 2006 8v Mark 2 Seat Leon is due some fresh plugs but access to these is very restricted by the plastic manifold running from the front to the top of the engine. I've had a good look at this and it seems to have quite a bit of gear bolted on so removing it would take some time. My question is, how much ripping is generally needed on the vw 8v engine to get at the plugs? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I've 48k km done but it's pretty sluggish especially when cold. The service manual does say 60k km or every 4 years but I would like to at least inspect them. The Seat workshop manual seems to think that a flexible plug spanner will do the trick (see attached) but you would need fingers like knitting needles to even getting it in place plus there is the risk of stripping the plug. I have posted this query on a Seat forum but haven't received any info. yet. I don't suppose any Seat / VW mechanics would be casting an eye over this? ;)
