avi files on PS3

I regularly connect an external h/d to my PS3 to watch avi files. 99% of the time, it seems to work fine, but now and then, I get a 'corrupted data' message on the PS3. The file plays fine in VLC player on my Vista PC, so is there something particular that I can do to get these files readable on the PS3.

(I've checked details and they're comparable in terms of bitrate and framerate with a file that does work)

I would love to know the answer to this too.
It completely wrecked my head for ages and i never found a solution.

In the end i just plugged my laptop into the TV and watched them that way :D

Yeah i get this as well. As far as i know this is due to the PS3 being officially Divx certified but not having all the codecs for xvid play back. There are only certain formats of AVI that will work. I still find it hit and miss.

AVI is just the container of the file, the thing that matters is how the file is encoded. AFAIK, Xvid will not work on PS3 yet, so you have two options.

    1. Stream and Transcode from your PC - Use this: http://code.google.com/p/ps3mediaserver/ Very simple program, easy to use. It transcodes files as it streams so they can play on the PS3.

    2. Convert files and transfer them via USB - Use this: http://www.redkawa.com/videoconverters/ps3video9/ Converts most video files. Again, easy to use.

ya use google code ps3mediaserver, plays 99.999% of stuff, works straight outta the box, no configuring,

    eg start it up

on xmb go to ps3mediaserver>c:>downloads>lost.avi and say it says avi not supported
just back and go ps3mediaserver>c:>downloads>transcode>lost, it well then convert and stream,
never have to manually convert again ! happy days

wont work if you have wireless eircom router ps3 settings set to nat 1, needs to be 2/3 with upnp enabled

I gotta say, unless I'm doing something wrong, this is quite possibly the worst software I've ever used. It finally, on the third attempt, managed to connect itself to a website to show the instructions (like what?) and after following them, it created a file an awesome 3k in size with an mp4 extension. mp4? Isn't that the ipod format? I've PS3 selected in all the options, but even so, the conversion process is just 'completing' immediately after it starts.

    Brutal piece of sh*t.

    Option 1 it is then!

i found this to be an issue of the newer version of video 9. i had to go backwards to the older version (luckily i keep most setup files somewhere) and use it! it is far better than the so called more advancedand up to date 1!!!

Yeah, I tried going back to 2.25 which I managed to find somewhere (latest version was 4.06 or something) but had the same issue, the 'conversion complete' just comes up immediately when I start the conversion process

    Oh well :(

should a portable hd work for this or should it be mains powered. I bought
one of the rugged 320gb drives from memoryc last week and it's not recognised.
I reformatted it correctly too. I've also tried a usb key with no luck.

these do work fine. when you go to the video section on the PS3 you should see the usb device, press triangle on it and select display all.

either that or you need to have your video content in a specially named folder. i think a "Videos" folder should do it.

All I was saying was that there were two options, if one didn't work the other one would. Just trying (and failing) to help...

I have not had any issues with the software myself but there are a number of other conversion apps around that you can use.
