Hair Loss, getting me down.

    Ok Long speile first...

19, I have long hair, bit past my shoulder length, I've had a healthy full head of hair for the last 12 years and it means a lot to me to have it like that.
    anyway
around September I noticed my scalp got really irritated and itchy, until i eventually scratched it red raw when it started bleeding. I found out the problem was that i had full blown Lice. I got rid of the lice using Pridoerm, but this had a really bad effect on my raw scalp. eventually the hair became brittle and started falling out in literally hand fulls.
i wake up and there's hairs all over my pillow
all over my chair in work,
all along the inside of my jacket.
there's no pattern baldness in my family (i know it's maternal, but both grandfathers had full heads of hair)
It's really started to effect me mentally, I put it down to stress because i was run down over the Christmas and new years but I haven't been showing any other signs of stress.
I cant sit comfortably in work anymore nor wear and jacket of coat without shredding clumps out.
every time i shower another hand full of hair comes out
which is strange because to it doesn't look like I'm going bald but i can feel how thin its gotten, which i think is worse. It's the just feeling of being constantly uncomfortable that's starting to grate on my last nerves
See it wouldn't be a big deal for most people, at least i don't think it would.
I grew up in a family all with long hair (Parents and brothers and sisters have long hair) and the way i wear it is important to me because if i were to cut it short (which i don't have a particular problem with) but i fear it'd just have me feel "incomplete"

(can slag or keep your opinions to yourselves on that, i don't really care.)

    Solution?:
Ok I know that shaving my head won't make the hair/scalp healthy, but i remember reading on these boards that there was a special shampoo that people were using help rejuvenate their hair/scalp in similar situations.
So what I had in mind was to cut my hair short(ish) keep it that way for a while. whilst using said shampoo and treatment etc. and then note for improvements before growing it long again?

    Basically, Any advice?

Agree with this. They'll also be able to tell you what shampoo will be of benifit to you: you may be using the wrong type, or you may be... god knows. Goto the doc. Spending €40 or €50 on the doctor will be money well spent.

Hey look on the bright side, it's most likely not permanent !

stress can cause hair loss as well...work on this if the doctor finds nothing wrong physically.

I would say though pick your doctor carefully, ask to be referred on to a Trichologist maybe if you can afford it.

GP's can be hit and miss when it comes to these kinds of problems, so dont get fobbed off.

Definitely shave your head. Long hair with bald patches just looks weird.

Sounds like it's probably temporary. If it's not, keep your head shaved and lift some weights. Bruce Willis/Ross Kemp do this and it makes them look good.

Don’t worry its only temporary. Just go to the doctor. Probably alopecia. Your lucky I start loosing my hair at 16, baldness runs in my family. I just wore hats for about 4 years. Wore them everywhere. I’m 26 now and I do the Ross Kemp thing a previous poster mentioned, it’s the only way to look anyway decent. I’m totally cool with being bald now, it’s who I am now. I think that period of going bald is actually harder than being bald.

    OP here,

    Thanks for replys.
I think i might to an "all of above" thing here in regards to yeer answers.

    I go to the Trichologist
will cut hair anyway and let it grow back healthy after treatment

I wont say 'i hate' but i have a disliking for people with obvious bald patterns with reaming long hair... or skullet, as it's known. So i'd never let that happen anyway.

    Thanks again!

Search alopecia forums online for your best advice and treatment...
