Ok big player are financial services and the knock on effect. Where is all the project work gone to?By this I mean I would be contracting for tech support and also helping with any migrations, upgrades etc..These have obviously been put off.It is tumbleweed out there since January for the most part. With roles being frozen etc..Can anyone offer more reasons why its gone so quiet. With IT services. They never had a surplus of people in the first place.I have worked in places with one other person.Supporting 110 onsite and 2 remote sites.Very disheartened at the moment......I cant get the more junior roles.they just won't offer them to me.If they exist at all...Would like to see real time be forced to delete all their roles..

I think everyone is afraid to start anything new at the moment.
As you said the market is "Frozen" or as I have found out to my loss, a lot of open positions are put on Hold.
If they can make do with what resources they have, then until the general consensus is that the economy is recovering, it's gonna be slow.

Thanks for your reply.I think the banks slowness with funds is affecting long term budgets and they're being extra cautious..Its very frustrating because the area is viable...Its just a new industry which isnt understood fully by the higher echelons at the top of the food chain at the best of times..

You have to remember that many companies, especially the big ones, don't run a Jan - Dec year. They tend to do march - February or may - April. So many IT departments are just hitting the end of their year now with little or no budget let and have to wait until their needs for next year are forecast and approved before they can hire again.

I imagine there'll be improvement come late spring / summer though I have a feeling many places will opt for rolling contracts instead of permanent jobs

I second this... I refuse to apply to any more jobs through them. In fact if they contacted me and offered me a job I would not respond. They are pure Evil.

Dept of finance might have something to do with it, they have announced a 50% cut in IT outsourcing, and dont expect the jobs to go internally any time soon.

Its rough out there and is nothing compared to the dot com collapse.

Was that in the news JJJJNR???If so would appreciate a link to it...I have never worked for govt bodies yet though...I find it a case that companies are spoilt for choice and are only going through with appointments when it suits them 100%..IMO they're probably thinking on it too much...And who can blame them with the govt giving out no confidence whatsover..

I was told by a reliable source, its on the Dept of finance website, also any purchases over 10k have to go through the DOF, for any gov body.. huge knock on effect.

Jess, calm down. You asked a question: "Why has IT services area gone so quiet??"

I thought the answer was obvious - there's a recession. Is it not obvious why IT has gone quiet?

    Alright, I apologise.

But if I started a topic saying I'm an electrician and "why is electrical work gone so quiet lately? There was loads years go, and now there's less - it's a mystery - anyone know why?!"; I'd expect to be called 'stupid'.

    Ray.

Indirectly insulting people is still insulting people. Less of it.

Honestly that you fail to appreciate that while yes broadly speaking the recession is at fault, there is much to discuss on what exactly is happening in the narrower sense. Which sub areas have been worst hit, what areas are doing better and so on. Regional patterns of supply and demand in the country etc.

They say that if you work for free you will never be out of work.

How much of a hit compared to previous pay should people expect to take to get a job ?

Are we going to see a race to the bottom or should things level off when people start to sign off on stuff ?

The 5 day ban I just gave you should help you calm down and spend your time not wasting on the likes of "Big Wave".

As the man nesf says - calm down everybody!
