    Hi everyone,
I was prescribed TRUOXIN. Would it cause thrush infection?
What kind of antibiotics cause it? Does it have to contain 'penicilin' only or something else as well? Would appreciate if someone could make it a bit clearer to me - info on the net is so confusing...

Caveat: I'm not an MD. But here's my take.

As I understand it, anything which can deplete the vaginal flora (general bacterial population) can potentially result in uncontrolled yeast growth. There's a whole load of factors involved in whether this particular antibiotic will have that effect on you. Strength and bacterial specificity of the antibiotic, how it distributes in various tissues, dose, length of the course, your own susceptibility...

I'd say have a chat with your doctor or pharmacist if you're very concerned. If you're very very concerned you could always get a second opinion. I guess it depends on how serious thrush might be by comparison to the condition your prescription is against.

Whether a woman gets thrush or not from Truoxin is very individual. Some women might get thrush, some might not. It all depends on whether that particular antibiotic manages to wipe out all the helpful vaginal bugs and let the thrush bugs overgrow. Some women seem particulary susceptible and will get thrush with any antibiotics. Others will get it only after taking broad-spectrum antibiotics (i.e. an antibiotic which indiscriminately kills all bacteria eg augmentin) or some women might not get thrush at all. Thrush treatment is only useful if a woman is bothered by itching and discharge. Don't bother taking thrush treatment "just in case".

I hope this isn't breaking the medical advice rules

Thank you very much for such a thorough explanation!
I forgot to ask the doctor when he prescribed it...
I do not think that is medical advise, just some basic info for dummies :)
Thanks again, it's much clearer now!

I'd be hugely grateful if people stayed away from offering their opinions on people's individual medical questions :)

Is the OP going to not take her antibiotics now that she knows she might get thrush? I don't know. But it's for those reasons we don't get involved in individual cases.
