Can I take this opportunity to commend the professionalism of two of our Olympic medallists, Darren Sutherland and Patrick Barns. Both along with Egan represented our country magnificently throughout the Olympics and were all delighted when the three boys came back with medals although JJ Joyce and (our next World Champion Medallist) John Joe Nevin also deserve an hourable mention.

Sutherland everyone thought would be the person to play on his medal the most; however this is not the case and he knuckled down to life as a pro and had impressed in his one fight so far, the other which is on tomorrow night and I wish him all the best. I know he writes on another boxing forum box rec and he comes across as an astute level headed man, which is very refreshing to see. I watched the film Saviours which he starred and again he came across very well, combining being an aspiring Olympic boxer while doing a University degree.

Paddy Barnes unfortunately couldn’t get a fight at the Senior Championships, no fault of his own. Fighters jumped up in weight to avoid the fierce Belfast man. He did however fight in a recent international against America and won convincingly. Barnes has become well known throughout Ireland since the Olympics but had become a celebrity in his native Belfast and although I don’t buy the Belfast papers but haven’t heard any stories where Barnes caused unnecessary attention towards himself.

I know people will counter this comment saying that Egan won Sliver and the two lads won bronze, but that doesn’t take away from their achievements.

I don’t want to come on here and bash Kenny Egan as what people may think from seeing the title in the thread, I just want to praise and commend the sheer professionalism of both Patrick Barnes and Darren Sutherland who have coped with the lime light extremely well and not have generated unwanted press or attention. I wish both these lads and Egan all the best in their future endeavours.
