Have started to notice more Irish people behind the counters in deli's etc. Particularly in Supermacs, where I haven't seen an Irish person i godknowshowlong. Good to talk to someone who speaks your language!

There was a bit of a stigma to these jobs for a while, good to see that we're not sticking our noses up before.

Sorry if this thread's been done

How come I'm the only one who never has linguistic problems with foreigners when buying sandwiches...?

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

I just meant being able to talk colloquially and not having to pick your words!

Me has a feeling this thread will lead to a torrent of abuse towards me

    Jesus forget I said anything!

    You're not the only one!

For the last year I have been served by a woman who i swear must refuse to learn english. It's a struggle from "brown bread" to "i'd like some cheese with that please". The annoying part is that she gets angry with you when you have to repeat what you said because she ignored/didn't understand it.

I don't blame her though, i blame the idiot who hired her for not making sure the woman had a fair grasp on the english language or that she had a view to learning as she worked (neither is evident 1 year later).

Hopefully some irish will take over now and there will be great sandwiches and a bit of banter!

There used to be two lithuanian guys in the spar in eyre sq, used to stand there ripping the living piss out of people who were drunk, in a nice way. Better way to deal with them than standing there with a scowl on your face.

    Off I go to bed.

My heart bleeds. God forbid you have to give a little bit back to the person providing you with a service.

Make your own feckin sandwich if it's that big a deal.

Saddest story ever. :( Good thing the economy has dried up, now you can get some service with your over priced sandwich.

And here's me thinking it's because I was polite and unprejudiced and didn't assumed that, because they were foreign, they automatically didn't speak English.

    Here's an idea: smile.
(Or order in Irish if you want to be a real wanker)

Can't say I've noticed a big difference. If the papers are being accurate and not overblowing stories then I'm thinkin I'll be asking for legal advice in McDonalds, what with so many former lawyers etc lookin for jobs there now

It is nice for a change seeing and more importantly understanding the person behind the counter as Irish. It will sit in nicely with the recession as it will remind me of the 80's.
