Old Books

I carry on a tradition which I inherited from my late grandfather, namely collecting books. I'm interested in first editions, of old novels and history books. Due to lack of funds the collection relies on occassional forays into second hand shops, were I've stumbled across an old edition of Butlers Lives of the Saints, and some very old Dickens collection, only for a few euros. Its mad the things you can pick up. Anyone else have this strange hobby?

    Yes!

Love "Finding" books!. have picked up some gems inc a few old books from early / mid 1700 hundreds!. I find the best option sometimes is to pick up boxes of books in house / contents auctions. Nobody seems to want them and quite often books get chucked in without checking what they are. Otherwise I trawl the shops for old books!

I've started collecting some books that aren't very old, maybe 50-75 years old? I have a first edition of Winnie The Pooh, a copy of Oscar Wilde's 'The Picture Of Dorian Gray' from the 1920's, and a Little Leather Library copy of his 'The Importance Of Being Earnest' from the same decade. A copy of 'Kidnapped' from the 1940's and a copy of 'The Count of Monte Cristo' from... I think the 1950's. They're not all necessarily really old, or first editions, I'm more into collecting pretty editions of old books I like. :)

I am a collector of old books, too. I agree, there are certain nice editions which are not that old at all. Certain books I collect need to be in very good order and original editions rather than reprints though. Goes for a lot of folklore and such books. I also used to collect old medical books but have since changed over to other areas.

I actually have no idea where to find old books really. The ones I've gotten, I've gotten on ebay. I'd love to get some really old ones though.

Have you tried any of the second hand and antique book shops around? Where are you based? There are a few in Ireland which are really nice when you know what you are looking for.

Ebay is good as well but also try http://www.choosebooks.com/index.do

and put in your keywords (any search words) or book authors/titles if you look for something specific. There are lots of antique book dealers on that site.

Try Kenny's in Galway. They changed to online service only a while ago but are now also abvailable again as a real bookshop. Des Kenny is a great help and also prepares book parcels if you want. Their store of books is really enjoyable and I can browse there for hours (there are comfy chairs provided etc: http://www.kennys.ie/

In Black Rock visit Carraig Books: 73 Main St. Blackrock
    County Dublin
    Phone: (01) 2882575

    In Dun Laoghaire:

    Naughton Booksellers
    8 Marine tce Dun Laoghaire
    County Dublin
    Phone: (01) 2804392

There's also one on main street there but I forgot the name. Nice general selection though.

I'm based in Cork, and have no transport. Either way, I've made a note of all the addresses there for future reference, and will try out that website, so thank you! :D

    No problem.

Most of the shops deliver, by the way. I got into old tales, folklore, supernatural and all that stuff a long time ago and there are some really rare things out there. Nice to get book parcels from time to time from your favourite bookseller or specialised booksellers and discover some real gems amongst the books. ;)

    Another site with addresses:

    http://www.irish-books.com/bookshops.php

Naughtons is very good, they also do a book tracking service. They are on the expensive side however. I have seen kennys online site and I was also impressed by what they have. Must check out the other blackrock one at some point.

A good place to find books is:

    www.abebooks.com

I use the rare books section to find old books.
