Repeat Exams

Just wondering...what's the story with repeating your summer exams? Is there any limit to the amount you repeat, presuming you don't get any NS's or anything? Not that I'm planning to fail any....but I think at this stage I'd be quite naive to think I'm going to pass them all.

I'm in JF Computer Science if that makes any difference.

You can compensate. In my day you could fail two subjects by 5% or one subject by 10% provided that your average grade was above 40% .
Supplemental examinations are a pain in the hole, but you don't have to pay for them and you can potentially repeat all your subjects.

In my day? You aren't that old..

It's still the same way (for engineers anyways).

Just bear in mind that you might not be able to repeat any CA parts of the course.

I never had to repeat but a mate of mine compensated once. Got 35% or so in one subject but carried it on because he did so well in the rest of his subjects.

Yeah I know about the compensating thing, but I'm worried I might do too badly for that. So you can repeat as many subjects as you want yea?

Yeah I know. I only have two subjects that are completely CA and I'm fairly confident with them. I think I'm doing alright in the rest of the coursework as well for other subjects....I'm fine usually with coursework and stuff because I have time to think through the problems and all.

The compensation is a bit different for computer science:

You can fail up to 10 credits worth of subjects by 10%, but you must also average 45% over all your subjects.

    Credits are as follows:
    1BA1-1BA5 are worth 10 credits
1BA6 and 1BA7 are worth 5 each (so you can in fact fail both of these by up to 10%)

Also I'm fairly certain you can repeat as many subjects as you want, but you can't repeat coursework, and I'm pretty sure any marks from coursework carry over to the repeats.

All this is in the nearly impossible to track down JF handbook, found the link a while back but no luck today.

    edit: Found it: http://www.scss.tcd.ie/courses/ba/assets/pdf/BACS_Handbook_JF_0809.pdf

Always good to give the handbook a thorough read at the start of each year. I failed engineering last year largely due to not bothering with 3 labs which (as the handbook later informed me) were worth 20% of 3 of the subjects.

There's a supplemental for 1BA6, but be warned - DO NOT leave yourself open for this particular supplemental.

Yea I've heard nasty things about that exam alright, but according to one of our peers, Tagney won't be failing anyone who's submitted something for every assignment with at least some effort put in.
