Say I want to start a DVD retail store, but I'm completely new to the industry.

Where can I find a list of distributors/wholesalers?

video shops aint the business they once were

the digital era has nearly killed them, wounded them at least

theres generations of irish teens now that have never rented a vid and probably never will and still manage to see all the latest movies

Agree with other poster find a better business to start. Look at what has happened to Chartbusters they went into examinership even with their multiple locations and economies of scale.

    Don't do it.

You're seeking to open an analogue business in the digital age.
You'll loose your shirt if you proceed.

i remember a time once when videos were so high highy in demand that you had to sometimes "book" them in advance to watch a certain movie -(thats not a joke btw for younger readers)

the local extravsiion used to clean up and there were many small video shops and also corner shops used to keep a selection of videos as well and make decent profits from it

now even the mighty xtra vision has resorted to selling mobile phones to earn a crust and chart busters have opened tanning salons and internet cafes in their premises

if that doesnt tell u something about the state of the industry nothing will

as internet speeds get faster and faster every year more and more people are switching to downloadable entertainment

if you REALLY want to get into the business and i wouldnt...... id look at either mail order movies where u supply an envelope for returns or a legal download service which may appeal to the minority who dont want to or are afraid to download for free with bittorrent

the benefits are u wouldnt have premises to rent or any stock to store with the digital delivery method

digital delivery jjust works on so many levels its not comparable to driving to a conventional video store-choosing a movie-bringing it home-watching it -having to drive back the next day-worrying about late fees....the list goes on and on

Hang on there everyone. He wants to open a retail store. Maybe selling, not renting?

Still a difficult cut-throat business, unless you want to be niche and cater for foreign/arthouse or similar. MIGHT be a business there.

Don't know if your still considering or have actually started your venture. I have a wealth of knowledge on DVD's, I worked at it for the past 4 years. I can give you plenty of info if you need it. DVD's are sourced from companies like NCV in Dublin, and due to regions and licenses none will come from China. Let me know if you still need help.
