There's myself and a couple of others that spin around the mid-Louth area at weekends.

If there is anybody else out there doing the same and wants to join in, then shout...

Me and a buddy cycle round the Cooley Mountains when we're not up in Dublin. Usually taking in Carlingford, Omeath, Flagstaff, Newry and Ravensdale.

I'll drop you a line if we ever decide to venture to the Mid-Louth region. I'd like to cycle along the coast at Annagassan one day. Well we all have a dream.

I need to start hitting the Cooleys in the coming weeks to get in shape for my 1st crack at the Wicklow 200. I'm definately interested in covering that area. Let me know the next time you plan to cover it. If your starting point is too far away, then I can throw the bikes into the van and travel there.

The Annagassan coast is a regular spin for us...

I start from Portmarnock and head up to Drogheda regularly but if you keen on starting in Drogheda and heading towards Slane / Carmacross I'd be keen. Also if there's any hills worth climbing I'd be keen.

No Hill is worth climbing Scott.NO HILL!!!!!!!!!!!!!
But seriously up along the coast is georgeous country (even louth :))

If anyone knows of the hill with the strange magnetic properties ie it acts as if it is flat or so i have been told. Now thats my kinda hill

I know where it is. It's called Gravity Hill or the Magic Road. I've never gone up (or down) it on a bike, but i do know the explanation behind it.

There's not much climbing around Louth except for Cooley and Ravensdale. Though I imagine Tully Esker out of Drogheda would be long dreary climb.

I often cycle up towards Adree direction and back down towards Slane, but if you are looking for good road surface the N52 from Dundalk to Adree and on towards Kells (only for about 10 miles) is pretty good quality! !
Must head over the coast direction though towards Dunleer and up, i'm sure it is pretty nice!
But as for hills Scott there is nothing really until you get to the Cooleys!

I live between Collon and Slane, not too far from the hill on the Cycleways Cup circuit. Theres no flat roads around here. Its kinda like Flanders without the cobbles. Although some of the road surfaces arent far off it! Plenty of short hills if you know where to look. I've only recently started riding again so when i get to a fitness level that means i can ride with other people i'd be glad to show yiz around.

There has to be s decent 100km + spin starting say in Balbriggan heading out into Slane way and back into Louth via the coast

New mountain bike club has been set up in the Slane/Townley Hall area outside of Drogheda, some trails around Townley Hall. Have a little website, only up and running so might be worth checking out.

Probably wouldn't be to the level that you guys compete but it might rock yours or someone else's boat.

The guy who is over it does the Cooley Raid and other endurance competitions throughout the country.

Thanks for that. Will have a look to see if the trails are kid friendly.

No worries, the kids trails are in Littlewood in Slane. Think there's 5 or so kids who take part, give him a ring sure and he'll let you know.

Tullyesker is only a bump in the road :) Covered it in my 108km trip yesterday.

Have covered reasonable miles in the past couple of weekends, it's time to start hitting the Cooley's in prep for Wicklow.

Pete - Not having ridden the climbs in Wicklow, I'm looking somebody who has to compare them to those in the Cooleys..

Are they ideal training for Wicklow?

    (1) Corn Na Mucklagh pub to Flagstaff: http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/ireland/-louth/344123774135340588

    (2) TV/Radio Mast - Ride 1: http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/ireland/-louth/470123774169455058

    (3) TV/Radio Mast - Ride 2: http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/ireland/louth/997123774182277641

Well the climbs are not as long as Wicklow but you there are some good hills.

for a long slow drag there is this....
    http://www.mapmyride.com/route/ie/cooley/360123776302598901

The road just constantly rises. I'm not sure about the end of this route. points 12,13,14,15 are up a road that doesn't really look like a road and is really rough and steep. It's signposted as the oriel trail walking route. Somewhere at point 15 there is a road which leads to a TV mast which I don't think is marked here.

For a short sharp shock you should take this route out of Omeath. I you come from carlingford direction, its a left turn after a petrol station.

I'm sure I'll be out over the next few weeks for a spin and I'll leave a message here, but this week I am mostly skiing in Austria.

Seeing as we are talking about the Louth area, can some of you fine people give me a route from Collon over to the sea and up the coast a bit and back to Collon or Ardee, (not from there but can get there using some nice back roads with a good ish surface) just looking for some quiet ish roads with a reasonable surface and some nice scenary for myself and the bro's sunday spin. He's not a mountain man and he's just trying to get fit again hence i'm just trying to build up the miles for him and at the moment our spins are at 60km so want to get him up to the 90-100. so thinking 30-40 km round trip to either town.

    Many thanks.

There hasn't been anything official. Covering the miles on my own at the minute as times haven't suited other people that I go out with. I usually start from the Dunleer area and head out from there. My spin on Saturday took me on a tour of the county.

Here's a 50km that is reasonably flat. The trouble will be getting back to Collon avoiding some of the hills. Try something like this.

If you want to get back to Ardee, then take a right at the 42km mark followed by the next left. This will take you along the Richardstown road to Ardee

Thanks for that decrrrrrr, is pretty similar to what i was thinking alright but just wasn't sure of road quality etc. Dont mind the odd hill at all that will do him good. He has managed the hills from Ardee onto Smarmore and onto Grangegeeth so he'll manage a couple of others!

    Thanks again!

Nice spin that decrrrrrrrrrr, i'll keep an eye out and see if u do get a group together, might join in myself depending on where your starting from and where your going. Might see if the group still goes out in drogheda on sunday, i've only been out on the bike twice in the last 4 months though so it could be a bit sore !

Saturday was not a great day to try this :)

    http://www.mapmyride.com/route/ie/omeath/687123776355176923

Got to the 3km mark but there was a serious wind blowing as I started the main ascent to the TV mast. Full on head wind and I was nearly lifted off the bike on two occasions. After the 2nd time, I pulled the plug on it. I guess I need to toughen myself up.. :)

Did the climb to Flagstaff a few times. Excellent view from up there.

What Saturday told me was I have a lot of Hill work to do before Wicklow though.
