I'm giving serious thought to getting a used 9-5. Must have auto box, sports suspension and a 'proper' engine (turbo??), fresh enough to have a warranty etc

What do you need to know about these cars? Whats the difference between, aero/ linear/ vector etc...

All 9-5 engines are turbo, petrol and diesel. I presume you want a petrol. There is a 2L, 2.3 LPT (Light pressure turbo), a 2.3 HOT (High output turbo) Aero and a 3L V6. All engines are pretty quick but the 4cyl engine suffer from oil sludge which, unless the engine has been serviced every 6k miles, can cause oil starvation. Worst offenders for this are the 2.3's. Doesn't stop them putting up huge miles when serviced correctly however.

Despite the reputuation the 2.3 Aero would be my choice as its seriously quick in a straight line and it has all the toys. If I bought one with dubious service history that ran well I'd budget for dropping off the sump to clean out any sludge and replace the oil return pipes to the turbo and top end of the engine.

Cyrus started a thread about a nice 9-3 Aero ( I Know you mentioned a 9-5) but this seems like good value to me.

OP - I don't know what your budget is, but i've been watching this one for a while - it looks like a good car, and the price keeps falling: http://www.driving.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=1325587

the way i see it, AERO is the only option :) very fast but watch torquesteer around tight corners. They are supposed to be decent cars if serviced properly and regularly. It depends what s ur budget....if you are looking for 08 go for the new 2.3 Turbo Bi Fuel as they should be sound on tax and still u can just put petrol in it as usual. If older than that then aero 2.3 T. But make sure FSH comes with it. the other thing is that servicing is supposed to be expensive as they are not as common.

Not at all. It's not that cheap. Offer him €10k cash and I've no doubt that car is yours. No mention of service history though, is there? Although I have a funny feeling it probably does have full Saab history from new.

Afaik that these cars have an 8yr engine warranty from Saab due to the sludge problems. I would imagine it is conditional on the car being serviced by saab dealers however.

I think I read somewhere that you need documented history that the car has had a (synthetic) oil service every 6k miles, but I might be wrong there.

That has to be the best looking estate car thats about .. cant think of another apart from the Alfa sportswagon but this isn't really that practical.
