I've always thought this was one of the best piccies to come out of Iraq, at least, that didn't involve me.

Why is the American crest on the the right shoulder worn backwards?

The official answer is that the Union is always to the front, as if it's blowing in the wind when travelling. For example, imagine the US Ambassador's car is driving past you, with the flag mounted on the little stand on the front corner. If you are to the right of the car, watching it go past from your left to your right, you will see the flag appear just as it is on the soldier's arm, with the Union to the right.

It isn't unique to soldiers, for example, look at the US flag next to the registration number of this airliner.

However, my personal guess (given that they didn't seem to worry about the 'travelling forwards' argument in WWII, when flags were worn 'normally' on the right shoulder) is that someone in supply screwed up, ordered the wrong kind of flag for the left shoulder, then they decided to just put it on the right shoulder instead.

A national flag has to be viewed from left to right. If there is an even number of flags on a building the national flag has to be the first on the left if you where looking at the building from across the street.

    Hope that makes sense!

The AC have the 'reversed' tri-colour on their aircraft too, it's not limited to the US

Just had a look at the pics there.Never copped to the flag on the tail,as you said reversed.

Only ever noticed the circle tri-colour thing on the door of the AW139:pac:
