Poor starting after overheating

The g/f has an 1997 A4 1.6cc. A couple of weeks ago the pipe came off by the rad and the car overheated . Unfortunately she drove it on abit after it happened as no warning light went off .

Anyway the engines OK but shes having problems starting the car sometimes.Other times it starts first click .

It can be hot or cold when it refuses to start. Basically the engine turns and turns but after an initial splutter it gets going eventually.

The mechanic has replaced the oxygen sensor(comming up as fault on diagnostic ) but the starting problem is still there .

    Any ideas please ?

Had a similar issue with a punto before, after several tests and deciding that the engine/head gasket was ok after over heating i went on to check the plugs.

I know i should have checked these first but hey its a punto, wouldnt be the first time a head gasket has gone on one.

The plugs were fooked and actually were partially melted when i took them out. Its a cheap fix it thats it so change them anyway as they cost little to do so!

The coil packs could have been damaged when the engine overheated. Coil packs seem to go wrong on Audis pretty frequently anyway, if this forum is anything to go by.

To check 'em, first take off the plastic engine cover plate, if there is one. Next, wait until it's dark outside, then start the engine. If you see little blue sparks jumping around near the coil packs, then they'll need to be replaced.

The oxygen sensor most likely had nothing to do with the problem. They go bad over time anyway, and unless your car has had a replacement one before, it'll most likely be well past its best after 12 years.

Would any of these items come up on the diagnostic unit .. the strange thing is it shows everthing is ok with the car

They might, or they might not. It's always better to check these things yourself than to rely completely on the diagnostic unit. After all, how do you know that there isn't a fault with the diagnostic unit itself?
