    VOTE JOE FOR PRESIDENT

    Manifesto for Student Union Presidency

    Accountability:
The Students Union is viewed by many students as just another service provided by the college, they don’t realise that they are members of it and have a huge say in its decisions. As President Joe would make the Union more transparent so that any plans or ideas it has can be seen and controlled by you, its members.

    Joe proposes:
    • Move executive meetings to a more public arena so all decisions and processes are influenced by the student body.
    • Publishing of Union Info Sheet every week which would inform all students of what each officer is working on and what he/she intends to do.
    • Have Sabbatical officers hold regular informal meetings with students in all faculties.
    • Ensure the Class Rep system is actively involved with the Union so their classes’ needs and concerns are addressed.

    Education:
We students don’t need the burden of full fees on our heads on top of accommodation costs, food, entertainment, study etc. With Joe as President he would not accept that education be turned into a money-making commodity, no barriers should be put in the way of those students whose parents or themselves are already suffering financially.

    Joe proposes:
    • Fees! Have a real campaign to defeat fees and cutbacks.
    • Grants! That the grant system be supported fully by the Union especially in these harsh economic times, so that all students who need financial aid are not left out in the cold.
    • Access! NUIG should provide opportunities for the recently laid off to up-skill and for all international students to get an education that is helpful to them.
    • Campaigns! Whether it’s a problem with the library machines or postgraduate payments, to ensure that the problems are not ignored but are campaigned on until there is a result.

    The Campus:
The NUIG campus needs some improvements, both to make it safer and more user-friendly. Issues around parking and food need to be dealt with, Joe as President would work with the relevant authorities so that an outcome that best suits you is reached.

    Joe proposes:
    • A campaign for a free multi-story car-park to be built on an existing car park on the campus, with preference given to students.
    • More lighting along pathways like the one leading up to Corrib Village so students can feel safer on campus.
    • Facilities across campus with microwaves and hot/cold-water. Also a campaign for healthy and affordable eating options to suit all students’ appetites.
    • The showing of films and documentaries in Aras na Mac Leinn on all topics and a practice area there for local and student bands, week in week out.

So, a vote for Joseph Loughnane on March 5th is a vote for a more accountable Union, a more accessible education and a more homely campus. He is prepared and has plans to implement his ideas; they are not just manifesto pipe dreams.

Joseph Loughnane is 22 years old and is a native of Galway City. He did his BA in Legal Science and Philosophy and is now completing his LLB. He is also a tutor to first year Philosophy students.
Joseph has been active both on campus and around the country. He is auditor of the Palestine Solidarity Society and Vice-Auditor of the Socialist Workers Student Society. He is one of the founders of Free Education for Everyone in NUIG and is also one of the creators the Urban Rhymes Society! As a result he has worked with hundreds of students on a vast array of events. Off-campus he has campaigned on anti-war issues, Shell-to-Sea, Palestine, rights for Asylum Seekers & Refugees & has been involved in many anti-racism initiatives both locally and nationally.
With Joseph as President the NUIG Student’s Union will no longer speak for itself but speak for you.
He can be contacted at 087 2729021 or by email at j.loughnane2@nuigalway.ie

BRILLIANT IDEA! But won't ever happen! Ever... Recession/depression....
    Sad, but true

Great use for the unused space! Or even using it as a cheap cinema would be good for students!

There may already be ideas such as this in the pipeline. The problem with student parking facilities has been ignored for a long time and it would seem that more affordable and a better alternative is in plans for college expansion. The voice of the students needs to be heard on this issue and really pushed for on their behalf.

Its simple and practical but makes a very big difference for those students who could possibly use this space very productively.

Parking in NUIG is a joke! I read something 2 years ago that said there are only 90 'student only' spaces in the college!
A multi-storey would be ideal and great use of space! I've been blabbing on about it for few years now!
Heard there is a park'n'ride service starting, from Dangan!

Also the 'gravel pit' carpark could use a little refruishment!

Exactly yet how many shell out every year and not have a parking space guaranteed? Within this issue is the core of Joe's policy. The SU seems to want to make sure they appease the College. The problem with that is then there is no real representation of the students as the important and difficult issues are never brought to the college. Most know Joe around the college and unfortunately perhaps in an infamous way. Those that do cannot deny that Joe would fight tooth and nail for the good of the students. I'll be voting for him because I know if something needs to be done Joe won't be afraid to go and get it done on behalf of the students.

I don't know at all to be honest... I don't know any of the candidates.

I'd like to know if they any impact really! Did Muireann do anything for the college, or Ciara the year before? I can't remember... But maybe I'm wrong.

If he'll fit tooth and nail, I'd be interested in voting for him. I'd like a strong candidate!

Have you looked into any of the others?

    Donna, Burrwa.....

On the current SU president I'd like to refrain from comment. I personally do not know what being president is like and the difficulties that come with it, but what I will say is that student issues were not handled with enough emphasise on the students. I think a student president should be able to let the college know what needs to be done without being afraid of upsetting the college. The SU is meant to represent the students and if that representation is onside with the college and has that fear to fully represent the needs for the student then I personally believe that the students lose out and that is a shame.

My opinion on the other candidates i personal. You Have to read their manifestos and perhaps try and listen to them addressing lectures and decide for yourself. I would however be very wary of those who plan on running and want to make a lot of false promises and are only truly considering what being president will do for their CV.

    GG?

There is no leader/commander/overlord within FEE it is essentially a group of concerned students. Joe is a member of FEE. God its such a taboo to be a member of FEE, the next generation have some legacy to try and out shine.

The multi-storey carpark will be built once the clampers have collected enough cash.
Parking today was a joke. By 10:30 am the only spaces left were along the road entrance to corrib village.

How is it your job as president to make the uni show films and documentaries?

I'm Joseph Loughnane, I’m 22 years old and I’m from Galway. My mother is
Pakistani, so I’m half-Irish, half-Pakistani. I completed the BA in Legal
Science and Philosophy and am currently in the final year of a 2-year LLB.
I am the Auditor of the Palestine Solidarity Society and the Vice-Auditor
of the Socialist Workers Student Society. I was involved in the make-up of
the African Students Society and Urban Rhymes Society. Between these 4
societies I have been involved in organising many events on-campus such as
charity events, having speakers down and many meetings on important
issues. I am also a tutor to 1st Year Philosophy students so I regularly
hear what’s bothering the new batch of students. Off-campus I am heavily
involved in many campaigns and committees such on topics like Palestine,
Right for Asylum Seekers, Anti-War Issues, Fees, Shell-to-Sea and Anti
Racism issues. In my spare time I write my own rap songs about the issues
that affect my generation and I am looking to create an album out of them.

Funny a lot of people said he attacked students and Gardai:confused: Yet he was not arrested or even given a warning the gardai. Basically what i'm saying is such a crock of ****e!!! He stood in the way of the gardai with the rest of FEE and tried to block the path of a crook coming on campus, Sin é!!!

I noticed at the hustings last night that he proposed to pay for this concrete leviathan with a student levy. Now he's either horrendously ignorant of the issue of the extant levy or he proposes a second one.

Like all good far-leftists, he has no problem maintaining several contradictory viewpoints at once. Let's abolish fees but add on a levy. Let's promote private transport over public.

    Survey the drivers
    Get some stats
    Who comes from where
Times they drive each day of the week (or as appropriate)
    Why they are driving
Can they avail of a bus service?
Can they cycle (safely - rural/primary route cycle lanes anyone?)?
Have they considered car-pooling (I smell a semantic web application)?
Have they considered the cost? :)
Would they support a university bloc movement to improve the City's, and by extension, the County's transport situation?

    etc.
