only 1gb of ram in the new entry line mac mini

    New iMac specs look decent

mac mini does have 5 USB ports, so that "fake" picture was at least accurate

The mac mini looks good, if a little pricey. I wonder how effectively it could be used as a media centre. If I thought I'd use the leopard features on a nice big screen, then maybe.....otherwise, apple tv or wd tv would be a better option.

They should maybe update frontrow to allow movie rentals and then drop apple tv.

ah mac fans..always good for a laugh :)
who else would wait for a new line up of computers.
I'm constantly upgrading my pc hardware but i look at the mac fans and try to work out why? Why do they prostitute themselves to Apple who lock them into their own hardware and software , then brainwash them into believing Apple is god and that PCs and Windows are the demon's tools and allow you to do nothing with them.

I'm still waiting for my 32gb iphone..have the 32gb itouch but really want all my devices in one..they better sort that MMS crap out and upgrade the camera first.

FFS. A PC is any computer. I'm so sick of hearing this tripe. A PC doesn't have to run Windows. Macintosh computers can be called PCs, as can any computer than runs a BSD variant or GNU/Linux or any other operating system. The "I'm a Mac, I'm a PC" ads are very inaccurate for this reason.

Hardware is primarily proprietary, as are the most popular operating systems (Windows, Mac OS). Has Microsoft, for example, open sourced the specification behind their mice, the Zune and other hardware? It, too, is proprietary.

Get off your high horse on about proprietary hardware and software. Do you use the mp3 format or only the non-proprietary FLAC and Ogg Vorbis/Thoera? Divx? There are many more. BS if ever I heard it.

BTW, I welcome the update to the Mac Mini. More RAM as standard would offer a better experience, however.

What does everyone think about the price increases.

    Seems about €100 on everything.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,025 ✭✭✭Ham'nd'egger

The Mac Pro line is now slimmed down into two models now and receives a hefty bump with it; it seems to cut down it's waiting time for customer spec models. Does anybody here use a Mac Pro at all or has it been shoved out by the iMac as it rarely seems to gets a mention anymore?

what price was the previous mac mini?

very little to be gained by buying the mini in the UK now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,699 ✭✭✭Brian

Yeah, I don't get the rationale on the reducing of keyboard functionality..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,375 ✭✭✭Shane O' Malley

Mac Mini was €499 for the entry model

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,929 ✭✭✭dubmick

so they've just increased the price by 20%

You look at Mac fans to work out why you are constantly upgrading your pc hardware? That's a bit odd, is it not?

But we are here to help.

You keep upgrading your PC hardware to compensate for the fact it is running windows.

    Yeh,

Looks like €100 on the mac Mini's

and €100 on the entry level iMacs

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,375 ✭✭✭Shane O' Malley

Price increases were even bigger in the UK

New keyboard? Basically the wireless one, with wires! Still cool though. I guess it makes sense for people who never use the number keypad

as long as they give the option for the keypad i couldn't really care :)

it's unusual for apple to keep the old product when releasing a newer one though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,031 ✭✭✭johnk123

Up to 2.26ghz in the mini, and 4GB of RAM! That would be a nice sitting under a TV alright!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,906 ✭✭✭J-blk

Plus it finaly got 802.11n and some decent GFX in the 9400M - I'm still underwhelmed though, not sure why :). I've always liked the Mini's form factor but I was kind of hoping for a cosmetic change too...

Anyone know if the mini-DVI/Displayport combo supports dual displays or is it one at a time?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,289 ✭✭✭Talisman

Mac Mini - Wireless N adaptor is a good addition. The Apple Remote is now an optional extra for €19. What are you supposed to do with 5 USB ports? The new base model is better value than the old top of line model.

Mac Pro - Wireless N card is now an optional extra, it was included in previous products.

According to the tech specs page:
Extended desktop and video mirroring: Simultaneously supports up to 1920 by 1200 pixels on a DVI or VGA display; up to 2560 by 1600 pixels on a dual-link DVI display using Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter (sold separately)
So looks like you can run both displays at the same time, though the mini-DVI port looks like it's only single-link.

    New mini, yay!
    SuperDrive standard, yay!
    Not using 2x512mb, yay!
    Dual-displays + decent graphics, yay!
No price reduction, ya--- waaaaaaitaminute... :'(

OK, might have been a tad harsh. Welcome :)

Hope they haven't made it any more difficult to remove the cover for DIY hackery and upgrades (think putty knife). If would be off-putting if they did seeing as the prices for individual components is rather pricey from Apple.

We're in the midst of a recession, and Apple puts its prices up? Strange business model but maybe it'll work. I'm just glad I bought my Mini a few months ago.

Macs are like a very demanding, difficult, expects you to change, expensive but stunning and filthy Swedish girlfriend.
PC's are like an honest decent looking Irish girl from Leitrim who has plenty of land and doesn't mind if you watch the football rather than go out shopping with her.

Both provide the same basic benefits but switching from the Leitrim girl to the Swedish girl feels like a major improvement, everything feels better...switching back is hard to accept!
Switching from the Swedish girl to the Leitrim girl seems like a serious step down and one you will try to avoid at all costs.

liking this analogy..can continue it a long way...most of your friends have a Leitrim girl, but want the Swedish girl and will never be able(read: allowed) to put the reason why into words.

you know the swedish girl is too costly but she can do things that leave you grinning... ;)

you are afraid of what the leitrim girl will do at any given moment...

and you wont have to remortgage the house, or travel the country to get a new and improved Leitrim girl... :pac:

aside: poor leitrim girl...still, somebody had to represent the pc.

apart from the dual-band thing it wasn't much of an upgrade was it?

Well there is "Guest mode" as well, but there's probably no reason why they couldn't provide that to older versions with a firmware update (bet they won't though!)

We needed a new router there a few months ago, and considered the Airport Extreme, but the lack of dual band was what stopped us. We got a Linksys WRT610N instead.

What's the currency exchange rate like at the moment? I'm thinking that if the basic Mac Mini with upgraded CPU (2.26GHz) was bought in the U.S. it would be priced similarly to the new base model here in Euro land.

A complete bargain considering the previous €799 model here was 2.0GHz, 1GB RAM, 120GB HD.

$749 for the base + upgraded CPU works out at ~€600. However that doesn't include sales tax in the US (usually around 5%) + VAT/customs/excise duty on importing it into the country.

You don't pay sales tax on the Apple website.

Yes you do, unless you are able to get it shipped to a state without sales tax. As an example, a plain (basic model) Mac Mini purchased in NYC:
    Cart Subtotal: $599.00
    Free Shipping:$0.00
    Estimated Tax*: $50.17

I think it is to do with the exchange rate and the recent strengthening of the dollar.
