Class 1 medical examination

    Hi there,

I need to get my first class 1 medic. exam.
Does somebody know whether it can be done in Ireland? And Where? I couldn't find a list of accredited organisation in the IAA website, except for Class 2 and 3 exams.
Will an Irish organisation give a JAA Class 1 usable, for instance, in France?

    Thanks.
    Kevin.

The Mater hospital in Dublin do them. I'd be very surprised if somewhere that did class 2/3 didnt do class 1?

A class 1 examination needs far more facilities than a class 2 or 3, which can be issued by a accredited family doctor.
For instance, in limerick, there 3 doctors who can give a Class 2, I would be VERY surprised if they could give a Class 1 as well.
    Thanks a lot, I'll give Dublin's a call.

I had a look at this webpage http://www.mater.ie/depts/default.htm, and I can't really say which departement to ring. Do you remember which?

Hi, I'm not sure about Ireland but the only place that you can do a
Class 1 in the UK is in Gatwick.
    Costs ~£310.00STG

How bad was your left eye to cause a fail?
I understand that you can pass with glasses.

That's what I though. The places where I can get it are quite rare.
    Thanks a lot.

Just call the IAA there must be a place somewhere in Ireland. It was about 8 years ago since I went so cant remember the exact location but it was in the Mater and was a busy department full of pilots being examined.

My eyes are 6/9 right and 6/32 left. 6/6 being the passmark for Class 1 and 6/9 for Class 2 in New Zealand. I applied for flexability and even then they said no to a Class 2 which is all i wanted to stay at PPL level. Im basically monocular from their point of view and the only way they pass that is if you used to have perfect vision and then lost an eye through an accident etc.

You can only do the Class one at the Mater hospital, in the Aeromedical department.

£317 for the Class 1 at Gatwick...

    You're right lads.
In dublin, its 600€, that's a rip off!!!
I think it'll be more reliable to fly to gatwick.

Edit : For instance in Paris it would cost me 450€.

    Saudek

I'm not 100% sure about how it works with the IAA but a while back when I was getting my CPL issued by the CAA they needed to have my medical details transferred from the IAA and issue me with a CAA Class 1 before they could grant me a CAA license.

Have no idea why because it was a JAA certificate and they'e both JAA member states but if you've got an IAA issued license, or are planning on getting one, the IAA may require you to have an IAA medical and will most likely charge you an administration fee if you need to get one, CAA charged me £30 to do it and it delayed my application by almost a month before everything was sorted!

So it might be worth just calling the IAA and ask if having a CAA issued medical (or any other JAA member state) will be OK before doing anything.

It really is a joke in this country, we can only do the initial and renewal in the one place, total monopoly with extortionate prices. Fair enough in the UK the initial has got to be in Gatwick but the renewals can be done all over the country with registered AME's and very competitive prices!

    All the best

    Jim

    Hi Saudek,

600 euro is a lot for the class 1 med and can only be done at the mater private.

if you factor in air travel to lgw it would probely work out around the same i.e breakfast/lunch in the uk.

also to renew it every year you would have to travel to lgw mine is up for renewal in may costing me about 240 euro in the mater private.

the IAA has a list of doctors that can carry out class 2 meds through out ireland,
    best of luck

You can renew a class one with most AME's I believe? Never done this myself but one or two people have told me it is possible. Would save alot of hassle.

I recently had my Class 1 and I struggled quite a bit with the colour blindness test.

I couldn't make out alot of the numbers in the Ishihara test.
Then they gave me the lantern test (with the 5 colours).
I had trouble distinguishing between the white and the orange.
Finally they gave me the 3 light test.
Thankfully I got 100% in this one and was passed.

It was quite worrying though, I thought that I was going to fail.
Has anyone else had trouble with the colour blindness test?

Here's an example of the colour blindness test on youtube.

They're wrong. You can't, otherwise I would renew it with my Doctor who is an AME. In Ireland it's the Mater or nothing.

Going abroad is all very well but you if you're getting an Irish JAA licence. You might as well bite the bullet and get it here.

Disclose my past medical history as regards to anxiety, depression?
I think I should. My friends say I should not? Help me people.
    Thanks

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 167 ✭✭airvan

It's not a question of failing to disclose. You will be asked the question. When you arrive you're given a form (and a specimen jar). There are a number of questions related to previous illnesses. Here's the CAA one.

    http://www.caa.co.uk/docs/49/SRG_MED160.pdf

The Irish one is the same. Note in the General Medical History section:

118 Psychological/psychiatric trouble of any sort

It's up to you whether or not you want to lie on your initial class 1 medical exam.

    Good luck with that.

Does a suicide attempt disqualify me automatically?!

Can any one answer this for me. I think I should be honest.
If I passed and they found out anything , I screwed?!

Airvan for that information, I think I'll be shot down before I even go for it!

    Be honest.
I know that going for the medical can be quite daunting but they're on your side.
As they say themselves, they want to get people up in the air.
They'll do their best to get you through, it's not a witch-hunt.

If you had an accident in years to come the lie may well to come back to haunt you.

Just get it out in the open i would say. I doubt if you're okay now there would be a problem? No point in speculating really, just ask the IAA.

Can anyone tell me do glasses automatically rule one out of contention to be a commercial pilot?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,941 ✭✭✭pclancy

No Way! Many pilots wear glasses. As long as your eyes are to a certain standard when corrected with glasses you can fly.

The FAA (in the US) have more relaxed standards then JAA (europe) as far as I know. Not sure of the specifics but if you want to find out if you can fly the best bet is to book an aviation medical. Class 1 is for commercial flying and Class 2 for private and noncommercial, even if your eyesight is quite bad often people will pass a class 2. Sadly I cant pass either because my left eye is practically useless but the only way to put my mind at rest was to actually go do the medical and i'm very glad i did. I can still have lessons and go up with an instructor so it doesnt bother me too much, at least i'm not totally blind!
