SKY HD.. HDMI only and Component Projector

    Hi all,

I have a problem with my home cinema set up and hope somebody can help me. I have just done up my house and though I was all sorted with my wiring- then sky hd came along.... Basically my problem is with the SKY HD box and it only has a digital out with the HDMI.

I have a projector Sims domino which only has component in or s video or video. Here is what I have...

    SKY HD (pace)
    hdmi out
    Scarts out

    playstation3
    hdmi out to onkyo

    Sony Blue ray player
    Component out to receiver
    HDMI out

    Onyya 606
    Component in from Blue ray
    Component out to projector
    SKY HDMI in
    HDMI out to Sony 32"
    hdmi in from ps3

SIM2 Domino 18 DLP Home Cinema Projector @ Progressive Audio Visual...

This has been moved recently and i have wired component cables and a HDMI (15m!:D) into the wall
    Component in from onkyo
spare hdmi cable n(future proofing) in wall wired from onkyo
there is no HDMI input for the Domino

    My questions
is it worth getting a HDMI / component converter to get the projector working. Can I get one in Dublin ? Could I run a HDMI out from sky into a Hard drive DVD and Component out into the receiver ?

can I buy another sky hd box with component output ? Dealer said I cant

I can scart output from sky box to onkyo and then run a new 10m video cable across new floorboards and into a projector ! The very untidy option in a new house:mad:

The easy option is to get a new projector with hdmi input but dont have the cash for that now

    Any suggestions welcome ...

Im curoius why you arn't doing HDMI out frm the BD Player to the amp?
There ahre HDMI->VGA adapters available and might solve your problem.

Agreed. You should have 4 HDMI inputs, more than enough

As mentioned if HDMI is available, use it !

Also, if not done already, you will need an optical cable from Sky box to Amp for DD sound, as Sky only passes stereo via HDMI.

My sky HD box has component out, do the new boxes not have component?

Yep, get a Thompson SkyHD box. They have a component out and HDMI out.

sorry maybe i didn't explain that correctly. No "hdmi in" on the projector.

Projector only accepts component for digital -(I have put a HDMI in the wall for when i get a new projector !) Projector has the following inputs
PC, Component/RGB Video, S-Video and Composite Video Inputs

SIM2 Domino 18 DLP Home Cinema Projector @ Progressive Audio Visual...

Hence I use the component out from the Blue ray player to connect to the projector. It looks fab but no tv and live matches ! Want to run the Ireland scotland match in hd from BBC.

My issue is that my new Sky HD only has a hdmi out and no component out. It's a new one (a month old) cant use the ps3 either as that is hdmi only too !

I have the digital cable for the sound- thanks rev

    any suggestions ?

can you not use the component out from the onkyo?

    We must be missing something...

    Sky >--(hdmi)--> Onkyo >--(component)--> Domino

Do you mean the amp can't convert the signal at all? Or is it a HDCP problem?

the amp cant send out hdmi signals via component.

get a hdmi - component converter (which dont seem to be available anywhere...) or a hdmi to vga adapter. hook everything up to the amp with hdmi then use hdmi - component/vga to connect the projector.

    like this

i cant for the life of me find an HDMI to component converter

This must be the first thing the 606 can't do. The spec list for them is unreal!

i dont think any of the onkyos can do that... i have the 806 and it cant.

we had this chart in work,

composite in can go out to Composite, s-vid, component & hdmi
s-vid in can go out to s-vid, component & hdmi
component in can go out to component & HDMI
HDMI in can go out to HDMI

im nearly sure this holds true for all their receivers up to the 876

Makes sense that you can't down scale from one higher quality input to another lower quality output esp when all the money and tech has gone in to upscaling :D

That's unfortunate. Trade up your pj? :)

No scaling necessary. The sky box puts out a 720p/1080i signal which can be carried over component without a problem and digital to analogue decoding is not hard. I suspect the problem is political rather than technical, HDCP cannot be passed over an analogue connection (thereby leaving the content susceptible to copying via the so called analog hole). Moot now anyway.

indeed, but the reason I suggested it is that my processor does provide the option. There are valid reasons for it, one of which is just the situation in which the OP finds themselves. However as more and more projectors come with hdmi, two hdmi outputs will become part of consumer requirements.

The video in/out matrix for my processor will transcode and (optionally) upconvert every input to hdmi and component bar 1080p which is beyond the boundaries of component video bandwidth.

I don't rate upconverting in receivers (certainly "entry level" to mid range) highly at all. Transcoding is handy though to reduce cable clutter.

Thanks everyone for suggestions. I am going to try and get another older HD box with the component out and if I cant I am going to get a video cable from the am to the projector- pity I didn't forsee this before I chased teh walls !

When the projector goes I will upgrade it. Fab pic with the blue ray and component and 80" picture !

Any advice on how to break this to the missus!;)
