What's hitting the spot at the moment?
A lot of shows and the presenters' appeal ebbs and flows. But who's flowing at the moment?

Credit where credit's due to John Murray and his team in bringing The Business (RTE1 Sun' 10-11 am) right up there in excellence. I've no personal concern directly in business but this show ties up loose ends, expands current issues and develops its own mini projects all the while informing the listener in clear, entertaining and often irreverent style.
This reminds me a little of that very good show Mooney had on wildlife a few year back.
Good work. Welldone to those involved.

Joseph O'Conner's and Olivia O'leary's weekly columns on Drivetime may be short, but they are always worth listening to.

Cant say I was ever a fan of his in his previous incarnations, but Brian MacColl seems to have found his niche on 4fm in the afternoon. Pleasant enough DJ banter just kept on the right side of intrusive, and quality tunes from the 60's 70's & 80's. Probably not to everyone's taste, but I found it to be ideal driving music.

Long may creditable competition to the established broadcasters exist and prosper.

You have a point there, Murray has a far better show than the half hour debacle he had before.Personally I usually listen to Newstalk up to 1100 on Sunday and Murray's Dublin accent is one of those that I find extremely irritating.Has promise though

Yes to Olivia, always on the money, however I find O'Connor a tad self indulgent and overdoes it especially on the poetic satire.
    Doesn't do it for me.

The Last Word is the best current affairs around at the moment IMO. Its a great antidote to RTEs tickling of the usual vested interests tummies.

I concur with both statements. O'Leary's erudite and articulate. O'Connor's articulate but he does rather over egg the whole thing. And isn't he just 'channeling' that black street poet bloke from way back: Lyndon Kwesi Johnson? I think it was he, though I'm open to correction, definitely some sort of 'homage' to someone I remember going on there.

The Business is a great show. Kinda Off The Ball for business if you see what I mean. You don't need to be interested in it to be interested by it.

I do miss Gerry McCarthy's gardening show from Sat. mornings for similar reasons.

Personally speaking, I prefer Newstalk's 'Down to Business' programme on Saturday afternoons 12.00-14.00- alot more informative and reports stories alot different than other shows.

    Indeed may it.
Although the station hasn't really popped up on my radar, as from its mission statement wouldn't appear to be my cup of tea, I'd like to give it a listen but haven't been able to find it (or it hasn't jumped out at me). I'm in the Dublin region and don't know what area on the dial it is. What time's Brian Maccoll on at?

Dublin freqs are 94.6 & 94.9 & McColl is on 2 til 5, sandwiched between Damien Kiberd on Lunch & Tom McGurk on Drive.

Like I say, probably not to everyone's taste, but the voices & music on 2fm, Rte1 and Today FM don't appeal to me during this time period, and I got to hear The Kinks, Johnny Cash, Louis Armstrong & Jeff Wayne for my troubles.

Heard Joseph O'Connors slot on drivetime repeated on 2fm this morning. The one where he is making use of the word "like" in excess. It was excellent He manages to be on the pulse of things. Very talented writer and I look forward to drivetime for his piece alone, even if the rest is a bit dry!

I'm not his biggest fan but thought he got that piece bang on. Built it up well.

Well, it made me laugh - a rare experience while listening to drivetime.

    +1
It is good, but somehow I have a feeling it has been slipping lately. Maybe it's just me.

I think that Olivia O'Leary's slots can actually make an impact on the listener, makes me reflect more on the issue. Joe O' Connor tends to be mere entertainment, imo...nothing wrong with that either.

I have no business acumen, but find myself listening most weeks. Very entertaining.

Pure cheese, but in a likeable way.

Credit to Sean Moncrieff and his show. I find it a very good alternative when other shows aren't floating my boat. Over the last week Duffer hasn't being hitting the mark for me and I haven't wanted for music at that time either so it's been very handy to have him there.
A very wide range of interests and topics covered and he has really come on to be a very steady hand on the wheel. Good show Sean.

(Ok, ok I will be avoiding it tomorrow as that's when he has those very irritating/grating women in).

Have to agree with you on that H

That person with the skangery Dub accent makes me want to cry blood.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 10,667 Mod ✭✭✭✭humberklog

Fully agree Flutt. How on earth they've stuck with her and the other one that's supposed to represent 'posh' is equally as irritating. Odd thing is is that I think he's got a good idea in having a Women's Hour thingy. But how they've maintained their seats... god (and Moncrieff) only know.

The posh old dear is McKeanes oul' one. I've no problem with the one from Irishtown but they should probably should rotate them a little. Moncrieff himself is a v. good host, interesting show.

Yeah, small doses though, couldn't take Moncreiff too constantly:P

Couldn't deal with him at all on TV years ago. One of us has changed.
