Hi folks,

My dad is looking to trade in his car. Now he is not getting a good deal on the car. they are only giving him scrappage. However, his car is much nicer than mine.

He wants me and him to swap cars so he can trade my hunk of junk in.

Do we need to change the names on the cars or what do we need to do?

Any help appreciated.

You don't need to reregister your car, just go in to the garage with him, bringing the VLC and proof of your identity.

thanks guys, so conflicting views here. Anyone know for definite. It would be great if i could just go to the garage with him.

If I do have to transfer the ownership - Does it need to be transferred for a set period of time?

Things could have changed since I worked in a dealership, but it sounds to me as if your car will be sold into the trade, so I can't see why a change of ownership would be necessary. If the garage were going to retail it then perhaps.

Change his car into your name and the dealer will change your car into their name until they sell it on

That's the answer.

No point adding an owner for your car by transferring it to his name before transferring it to the garage name.
