Physical cable connection or satellite/wireless (Chorus)? Latter requires a DVB-S tuner for sure.

Mine would be a physical cable connection.

I don't suppose its possible to go direct form the cable to the pc, bypassing the chorus box??

I presume not, so in that case, whats best??

You need a tuner card which takes composite/RCA input and that support MCE which requires mpg2 hardware encoding. There are loads of types. Some do this and also have dvb-t and dvb-s or analogue tuners too which could come in handy for the future.

See the Post your setup thread also.

Hauppauge are popular. Many come with a remote receiver and remote control too which is usually a requirement for people using it with a TV. However you'll need the remote receiver which has a transmitter which you stick onto your NTL box to change the channel for you.

FireDTV do a dvb-c card (floppydtv i think) it has a slot for cam and card. This would bypass the stb.

As far as I'm aware, if NTL is set up the same as Chorus (which would make sense as they're moth under UPC) the smart card is matched to the specific STB and cannot be used in any other STB, NTL's or any other. So the FloppyDTV would not work. This is different to Sky systems which I think would work in such a set up.

However, I have never tried this so it's only my take on the way this stuff works as I've been looking into it myself recently too. If someone else could confirm or correct me on this that would be great.

OP, my suggestion to you is get a tuner card with composite inputs and simply route the STB to this. Also, get an IR blaster so you can control the STB using the HTPC remote.

Sky certainly pair the card to the box. The CAM solutions usually require you to enter the serial number from your box so it can pair successfully with the card. I'd say NTL/UPC could be done the same way.

I guess I stand corrected so. Good to know.
