Any idea how I can get a cutting from an existing griselinia hedge to make another? I have about 40 plants I need to plant bordering a small garden, but at about €6 each at my local garden centre, I was thinking of growing my own if it was easy enough.

I have about 20 of them about 3yrs old in my own garden so are they old enough to take cuttings from and how easy is it?

Sorry mods, could you please move to Gardening forum?

I think its a bit late to plant cuttings. The ideal time is Oct/Nov. You could try half a dozen, juat to see if they would take root. The way the temperatures have been these last few months, anything is really possible.

how do you get them to take root?

do you need to put them in plant pots?

Take cuttings at least 1 ft in length. Point the end you will stick in the ground. Put some rooting powder on them if you wish, but where you are, it may not be much addition. Pull off the bottom 2 leaves, and stick in the ground to a depth of about 4 ins. If they take, then Bob's your Uncle. If not , better wait till next Autumn. Taking cuttings is by far the cheapest option in these challenging times. Griselinia is one of the easier plants to grow, and if you keep it tidy, it will make a good hedge. Should reach 5ft in about 4 yrs.

I'm no expert but I've heard of people taking a cutting as above, splay the end and putting it in a bottle of water so it grows a root over afew weeks. Then planting it before end of April. Worth a try.

might try that....I take it you wouldn't need rooting compund if its going straight into water?

No need to use rooting powder but it might help. Put the bottles on a indoor window board that gets the sun.

You could also try putting cuttings with splayed ends directly in the ground (once theres no frost!) Plant more than you need as many will fail.

I might try all three ways myself just to find out the best method!
Its worth a try. What have you got to loose?
    Good luck

Well in another case 30 years on the hedges around the family home are fine. The whole lot grew from just pushing 20-30cm lengths of Griselinia hedge cuttings into the ground every 10cm. Most grew.
