    TDK?
Might go to the Imax for this one, or at least somewhere with a decent screen... Are there any shots in this that were done with the Imax in mind? (ala Dark Knight)

I wont be going next weekend. I'll be going this week thanks to Movies.ie :)

I looks fantastic, and the reviews have been really positive.

They seem to be really pushing it on the web.

    interviews with the cast here

    http://entertainment.ie/Movie/feature/WATCHMEN:-Video-Interviews-With-The-Cast/2/119.htm

Jeffery Dean Morgan seems to be really funny, but good lord, Malin Akerman is attractive.

Have my tickets for the Savoy on Friday already.

i work weekends so thats a no no for me.

will be going on monday though. this is pretty much the first film ive wanted to see this year. dont know why but nothings really appealed to me the last year or so in the cinema. that and inexplicable show times has meant i passed on a lot of stuff. (case in point underworld rise of the lycans. i WANTED to go see it but the earliest show in the two cinemas near me was 4.30 and i dont like going anytime after 3 if i can help it. if it had've been shown at 1 or 2 id've been there. ah well)

from the clips ive seen on the net it looks good and word is its remarkably faithfull. i dont know if that means it'll be a comercial sucess or not but certainly its persuaded ME to part with the cash :)

Most of my year in college is finishing an exam on Friday and then heading straight to the nearest cinema to see it.

It all depends if its "Free List Suspended" or not , If it isn't I'll go Friday afternoon when all the great unwashed are either in school or working (though with the recession there probably isn't many working) If it is "Free List Suspended" I'll probably have to wait a month or so to see it like The Dark Night or view it through the old interweb.

    Just back from the movies.ie advance screening and I thought it was fecking brilliant as it did a great job of remaining faithful to the comic with one exception;

    Spoiler:
The ending is slightly diffrent as alot of people already know but i think the new ending suits the film and gets the same result as the comic.

Most importantly Rorshach is portrayed perfectly.

Rorshach and Nite Owl were unbelivably perfect casting.

    Crudup was good at manhattan.

Hated Sally Jupiter though and Silk Spectre was decent, think Malin Akerman is getting a bit too much flack.
Hated Ozymandias's accent though in private. It was a bit too campy German for my taste.

Didn't really like the end, I can see why they did it but I'm a purist so I'll be happy when the dvd directors cut with it comes out

All in all though a near perfect adaptation of the comic book. Will be better when the Directors Cut is out I think. 8/10

Average at best for me. Far too long and drawn out.
Some great fight scenes, and Rorshach is pretty damn cool

    6/10

    I suppose I'm a fan of
films where the good guys win, and the bad guys don't get a look in.
Black and white. I enjoyed the sections where this came into being, the
bit in the prison and the mini-rescue
being possibly the only two parts I relaxed in.

Plenty of things I didn't like:
The monologuing. So much talking, stupid anecdotes, such crap that just hogs the storyline, I don't want to know about a joke about some dumb clown.
That gigantic clock Dr. Manhattan was making.
The ending (but I suppose there's a few out there who hate the textbook superhero endings, but hey, call me a sap for what's in the first spoiler).
The unbeleivably pretentious choosing between classical music and cheesy 80s music. Always the wrong track, at always the wrong time. Maybe I'm just used to dark broody evil, like joker's theme in Dark Knight.

If you liked spiderman, you'll hate this. I'd consider this the pale unloved brother of Sin City and 300. Next in line would be The Hills Have Eyes in my "I Hate You" line (and I. do. not. like. The Hills Have Eyes.)

If you feel crap, avoid this movie.

If you've never read watchmen (like me), don't watch this movie.

I hate the 80s. The only good things to come from them were Ghostbusters, Back to the Future, 80s cartoons, the A-Team, and my good self and my generation (born in the 80s).

My God, I hope we don't revert to that God-forsaken era.

    I need a valium.

The lack of focus in the plot was a bit distracting but I enjoyed the film primarily due to The Comedian and Rorschach.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,857 ✭✭✭Valmont

I thought it was a masterpiece, and although I hate to admit it, the ending was way better than in the book. Great soundtrack, bizarrely humorous, great action scenes, very close to the book in terms of dialogue and photography (well I thought so anyway) and the actress who played Lori is now officially the hottest chick ever in any film.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,857 ✭✭✭Valmont

I went to the 16.30 show in the Savoy, no queue at all and only 3 dickheads who got bored towards the end and felt the need to shout at the screen. Hopefully they tried to run across O'Connell street afterwards and were run over.

The queue for the 20.30 show was almost to the GPO down o'Connell street, no word of a lie. I felt like laughing at everyone queuing since I went in and bought my ticket right there and got a great seat with no one in front of me!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,323 ✭✭✭Savman

Well, this was a bitter disappointment. Irritatingly bad in parts, saved only by that badass dude who stole the show.

I dont think I will ever watch this again in my life.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,629 ✭✭✭LowOdour

Saw this today....got up to the cinema after work and it was full of young goth types standing outside. I was thinking wtf am I, a 27 year old father, doing here!

But, back to the film. Parts were great....thought the actual opening scene and credits were class. Was really expecting alot then.
Felt bits of it drag, the action bits were great though. Id agree with most that Rorschach as a great character.
I just didnt feel fullfilled leaving the cinema. Its a good film but not great.

Rorshach was about the only decent thing in it.

LOL, I'm listening to a reviewer right now on Newstalk talking out of her hole. She rubbishes the main strength of the film, the acting, and she referred to the film as way too violent unlike Tarantino's "ha ha" violence. I don't even think she watched the film, although I'll give her one thing, the plot was a mess.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,930 ✭✭✭✭challengemaster

    There was a plot?

Well if that was the main strength then it really is shit. The two main female characters were awful, particularly the mother who was played someone clearly in her mid to late 30s. The makeup used on her was so obviously false. Why not cast someone of that actual age in the role?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,323 ✭✭✭Savman

Now that I've slept on it, in the cold light of day there are just so many things wrong with this movie. For the first time in years I was twitching in my seat toward the end with the hammy hammy acting and long drawn out mind-numbingly boring scenes.

Apart from Rorschach (who was excellent btw) there wasn't a single soul on screen I could give a damn about, the thing was a friggin mess.

The best part of the evening was the trailer for Transformers 2....that will be 'entertainment'.

Don't understand the love of Transformers at all, and I don't mind stupid movies (National Treasure ftw). I found the film hit and miss, but really powerful at times (The Manhattan cancer revelations during the interview) and thought Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Jackie Earl Haley were incredible. Out of 6 of us, three of us who read the graphic novel thought it was hit and miss, of the 3 who hadn't two loved it and the third thought it was terrible It really is cutting people right down the middle

IGN's review pretty much summed up my feelings for this film though:

"I truly wanted to love Watchmen, but I never warmed up to it and ended up only liking it in parts. There are moments where it rouses to life and I was reminded of what I've appreciated about the graphic novel for close to a quarter of a century now. But every time the movie pulled me in, it almost immediately did something else -- such as a cheesy, almost campy image or music cue -- that pulled me right out. Snyder's film failed at accomplishing two fundamental tasks -- the "whodunit" aspect of the story, and making you feel and understand the magnitude of what Ozymandias did -- and because of that Watchmen is a noble failure. It's praiseworthy to see a film strive to be deeper and more serious than many other comic book movies, but a hit-and-miss effort doesn't help the genre no matter how lofty its intentions."

25m on Friday in America by the way, so 300's March opening record is safe

I really enjoyed it. I went to see it with two people who knew nothing of the graphic novel and they thought it was good too but they also said they had no idea what some of the characters names were. they aren't thrown around enough. cant remember hearing the Silk Spectre name at all.

And there was way too much blue cock flying around :p

I think Snyder did that just to maintain the "style" and glamour of the film.

I think the acting in general was solid, especially from Jackie Earle Haley and Jeffrey Dean Morgan. They really revelled in their portrayal of their respective characters.

Patrick Wilson was as reliable as ever while Billy Crudup and Matthew Goode did their roles justice. I even enjoyed Malin Ackerman's performance because it was refreshing to see a leading female in a superhero movie not being a damsel in distress.

I saw it yesterday. I've only read the graphic novel twice, so I'm not a rabid fanboy ;) I enjoyed the film a lot. It has weak spots but overall it was pretty damn good.Jackie Earle Haley and Jeffrey Dean Morgan were excellent in their roles. I'd definately go see it again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,081 ✭✭✭ziedth

For all its faults (and there where alot). I really enjoyed it when I went to see it last night. Some of the scenes were overblown but I never saw the comic so I'm looking at it from a purely film standpoint.

All in all i'd give it a stronger then expected 3.5/5

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,435 ✭✭✭wandatowell

the film was great, loved every minute of it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,080 ✭✭✭✭Tusky

I absolutely loved it. I dont see how anyone can give out about the plot being all over the place, as its near identical to the graphic novel. You could make some criticisms, but they would be minor. I was glued to he screen and didnt get bored once. I also thought it was beautifully shot and was surprised how violent it was. Can understand someone who hasnt read the book not liking it though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,571 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

    *puts hand up*

Yeah, I didn't read the graphic novel, and I was very underwhelmed by the movie. It just didn't click for me. Some great performances (especially Jackie Earle Haley), and I liked some sections (the start with the comedian, the prison, the end confrontation), but it was a bit meh overall.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,246 ✭✭✭✭Dyr

Pleasantly surprised, the actors did an excellent job, the script is true to the graphic novel, as is the set design.

but it's really not a great film, I'm not even sure it's a good film.

the use of the songs n the soundtrack was really really hamfisted though, totally spoiled many scenes.
