i normally get an application form in the post around june/july and then have all the best intentions of sendin it straight away and then leave it till the week before sept. im sure im not the only one

July is plenty of time, NPWS licencing section are very efficient, they only start sending renewals out in August. First time applicants should apply earlier because they are checked in greater detail and take a little longer.

It would be in your interest to apply straight away. I presume this is your first license? If you are also applying for a deer calibre the gardai might require this permit to be issued to you first as proof of intended use of the centrefire calibre.

If you apply now, the permit won't be issued till august (open to correction on that one), but if you are waiting for the permit before applying for license, the NPWS can issue you a letter stating they have received application, and all things going well you will be issued a permit. This was what happened in my case.

This is the link for a PDF permit application form

What do you do if you are getting a deer licence for the first time and havn't got a gun yet either? Do the Guards need a deer licence to give you a gun licence and do the NWPS need the gun details or can they be send on later when you actually buy it?

My cousins boyfriend has this bother cant get either to blink and let it get sorted. gards need deer licence, deer licence people need gun licence, has deposit paid on a centrefire too (not sure on calibre, but i know its suitable).

its the whole chicken and egg situation all over again.

the deer license people don't need the firearms licence. They just need the make, calibre and serial no. of the rifle.

Is it easy or difficult to change the rifle details after the deer licence is granted, eg I find a better gun or one at a better price!!!

There's no need. The rifle's information is not on the stalking permit.
