i'm mainly a guitar player but i have been asked to join an 80s band and play keyboards as well. i have an edirol pcr800 and a macbook running ableton live with loadsa vsts like massive, absynth and pro53. i also use reason rewired into ableton. is there anywhere that i can get presets any of these for 80s songs like bette davis eyes, everybody wants to rule the world etc, real cheezy ones?

It'll sound crap if i dont get the sound right and im just using string sounds.

    thanks in advance dudes!

The Native Instruments FM7 vsti emulates an 80's classic called the Yamaha DX7, its been used on too many songs to mention.
It was incredibly hard to program so most pop bands just used the presets that came with it.
The NI version comes I believe with Yamaha's original presets, and I hear they sound pretty identical

Also try General Midi's built in standard sounds, they are REALLY cheesy and maybe have a look at some of the moog emulators

would that be early eighties or late eighties? There's a new VSTi synth out at the moment called Cobalt. It's meant to copy some of the hybrid, Analog and Digital synths like the Ensoniq ESQ-1.

The FM-7 is a DX-7 type of thing not great pads I seem to remember. There's a Roland D 50 clone available as a VSTi. The Korg M-1 I suppose would be in there with all those kind of sounds too though that was more of a sample playback affair.

DX7 was never any good at pads etc but good at bell type tones. I could never understand what all the fuss was about them to be honest.

I remember a music mag giving away a Flexi Disc with some of it's main sounds on it !

pro53 can put out some lovely retro stuff with a few tweaks of the presets

there are 4 presets called french 1-4

if you push up the sustain and add a little lfo to the filter youll great as 80s a pad as youll hear imo
