Water

Ok, I'm trying to up my water intake at present. I drink 750mls in the morning at work and another 750mls in the afternoon. When home, I have a pint glass and drink approximately another 2 or 3 pints. I figure that is sufficient but wanted to check.

Also, should you count in any water you have via tea or coffee? I have one large mug of decaf coffee with breakfast and two large mugs of tea during the day.

Am I having too much or doing ok? Responses appreciated.

The 8 glasses of water a day recommendation means the equivalent of 8 glasses of water a day. Unless you feel dehydrated you're more than likely taking in enough. If upping your intake leads to a spike in bathroom trips then lower it. It's not something you really need to worry about I wouldn't have thought.

dont count tea or coffee as water in take you should really give up the coffee.

To be honest, I was dreadful with drinking water before this - I could go all day without anything but a cup of tea which is very bad I know (hence making the effort). Therefore, there is a spike in going to the loo but it's probably more of a normal pattern now.

I am somewhat confused about the 8 glasses of water thing because that doesn't really give a proper sizing - I have large pint sized glasses at home and drink from them. I believed 2 -3 litres a day was recommended which I think my 1.5 litres in work and 3 pints at home probably reaches but wondered if the water from tea and coffee adds to or subtracts from that (given they can have an diruetic effect).

What I'm having now is perfectly doable for me - actually I wonder now how I got through the day with next to nothing!!!

Even if it's only one mug of decaf a day? I used to have low fat lattes every morning so a large mug of decaf with a splash of skimmed milk was my low fat version. Not quite the same but I'll live!!

The 8 glasses corresponds to 2 litres or about 3 and a half pints.

Unless you're exercising a fair amount you won't need much more than this. Even with exercise a litre or two around the workout along with the usual will suffice.

Ok ... seems I'm doing alright I'd guess and don't need to worry too much. I had heard of the problems with excess water so just wanted to check all was ok.

    Thanks.

The 8 glasses a day is just a myth, nobody seems to know where it comes from
    http://www.snopes.com/medical/myths/8glasses.asp

The business of people walking around with a 1.5 litre bottle and swigging from it all day long is usually just a waste of time.
You could argue if you're a serious athlete and sweat a lot every day it needs to be replaced and that's true, but most people I see carrying a bottle around don't look that active to me.

Yeah the "chronically dehydrated" bit is bull.

Both of those things are wrong. No harm in the odd mug of coffee, and you should count it towards liquid intake.

    link.

    Jesus, I love coffee.

No you should give up coffee, tea and anything else you like. Sex is right out as it can severely dehydrate you.

Not if you do it right, as a sprint rather than an endurance event.
There's a 'fast twitch muscle' gag there somewhere............
