Talking about athletes, I prefer GAA girls (some can even handle the stick).

Paul, may I ask you why do you use Spot Metering? I don't know if you crop the pictures before posting, that's why I am asking.

If the background is very dark and you use evaluative metering or any metering that takes an average of the scene then they will be underexposed where as spot metering on the 1d is very accurate approx 1% (If I remember right) will expose where you place it and it can also be moved to the active focus point using a custom function

Great shots Paul, last two are excellent with the last just stealing the glory..

That explains a lot. I am just a simpleton in this - I just measure light, check the histogram and go to manual. But that also explains why are my pictures mostly underexposed :o

It was very dark there with not the best lights. I know the Sportsfile guy was shooting ISO 5000 to get fast shutter speeds. I haven't checks his picts though.

I was happy enough using ISO 1600 getting 1/320 or 1/400 sec at f/2.8.

Spot metering, as Borderfox says, just gives the exposure for the focus point. It doesn't consider the background light (or lack of). I'm not sure what sort of exposure I would have seen using evaluative metering last night.

    As for tough tackles -

I like the second one, of the penaly kick being taken. Much different from the normal sports photos.
