Lollipop Day

I hope everyone was supporting the crews in Dublin City today, I think it's all happening again tomorrow too. Such a good cause. The city was swarming in volunteers which was great to see.

Sorry I forgot to say Lollipop Day is a designated day much like the Irish Cancer Society's Daffodil Day where volunteers set up in various locations selling lollipops/badges in aid of Oesophageal Cancer Fund.

Hi, I am a 2 year oesophageal cancer survivor. I was diagnosed at only 32. The profile of most people with my condition was that they were overweight/smokers/drinkers and older...that profile is changing. I was young, BMI 20 (normal weight), light drinker and not a smoker. The reason that they use lollipops to highlight the issue is that one of the first signs of it is that you can not swallow properly. The lolipops cost 2 Eur. Doctors need to be educated in how to diagnose this - when I went to my then gp he said that if I had f***king oesphageal cancer I would be dead by now...as it it took me another 6 weeks to be seen privatly...in the interim I went to another specialist who treats another condition I had who thought that I had anorexia! By the time I went to the specialist I had to carry a plastic bag with me everywhere as I got sick all the time...I got a barium swallow the following day and on the Friday had an emergency endoscope and was told that I probably had it, a week later it was confirmed...

Sorry for getting so serious here - is just an issue very close to my heart.
