I created a windows XP bootable image earlier using 6 floppy disks, everything went well. Now im trying to format one of the floppys but I get the message "Windows was unable to complete the format".
I have tried formatting the floppies on another computer running win98 and it fails with the same message. Have done some searching and there are alot of posts but no solutions.
    Any ideas?

Been a while since I heard of anyone using floppies to boot a PC! Anyway I'd say that particular floppy disk is knackered, time for a new one

I know, its been years since I used floppies. Having lots of problems upgrading this old PC, which I cant mention here :).
I have tried a couple of them and get the same message.
Just tried formating it through cmd. Get a message 'the type of the file system is RAW' 'the new file system if FAT', 'Invalid Media or Track 0 bad - disk unusable'
The floppies are new as well.

Apparently this can happen with flash drives as well.

IT-Guy I think you were right, ran chkdsk on the floppies until I found one that was FAT (not RAW) and this formatted ok. Its weird though because all of them formatted ok an hour ago.

That is strange, I'd expect the floppies to be FAT12 rather than RAW. RAW is just unallocated space AFAIK. A poster mentioned gparted software in the link, have you tried using it to format the floppies? Seems like an awful waste of time though when it's probably quicker to get some new floppies!

Ye I just gave up on the ones that displayed as RAW, waste of time trying to fix them. Got one of the floppies to work and created a windows 98 boot disk. Now the PC prompts 'Remove disks or other media', even when there is nothing in there. Disaster, im not going to get this done any time soon :(
