Can I just drive the car back to the republic?
How can I pay the VRT?
What if I get stopped by the Gardai?
    Thanks

First thing you do is smile, knowing what you have just saved, then...

Drive it back (having arranged insurance first)
Take it your local VRT office the next day.
    Pay money.
    Buy plates.
Wait for Registration document (2 weeks-ish).
    Tax you car.

    Done.

There's a big thread with all the info on importing a car here, a quick search should throw it up.

you can tax your car the day you pay VRT, they give you a receipt with a pin on it to tax it online!

the registration doc is only created after the car is taxed.

Do I have to pay UK car tax do drive from the UK car dealer to the ferry?

You cannot legally drive in the UK without valid car tax. That said, lots of people chance it - at the end of the day, it comes down to how lucky you feel and the potential mood of the policeman who stops you. They do have widespread ANPR there though, you're a lot less unlikely to be caught than you would be here.

if stopped by uk police (without tax,mot or both) you will be fined on the spot
and car impounded untill paid. Where do you intend driving from??? fine is 250>300pounds

I intend to buy a car in Chesham, london area next week. it's an O8 reg and I was just going to pay for it, transfer my insurance and head for Holyhead. Never though about taxing it for the journey to the port!!
So if i HAVE to tax it can I do this in advance since and get reimbursed from the DVLA folks??

get the dealer to tax it for you for shortest period possible, uk car tax= less than fine, return the disc to dealer afterwards they can reclaim the value of it.
    all the best
