Skins make Haynesworth a $100 million man
Posted: Adam Schefter, News | Adam Schefter | Tags: Albert Haynesworth, Washington Redskins

Football has its first $100 million defensive player.

Defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth reached agreement Friday on a seven-year, $100 million - yes, $100 million! - record-breaking deal with the Washington Redskins.

A press conference is scheduled for Friday at 5 p.m. ET, assuming Haynesworth passes his physical.

The deal includes $41 million guaranteed in the first three years, and the maximum value of the deal could be $115 million. It is the richest contract ever given to a player and includes more guaranteed money than in any contract in NFL history.

And just like that, football has its first $100 million defensive player

With re signing DeAngelo Hall earlier today as well, they are shaping up to have a pretty decent defense

You've got to be ****ing kidding me. Can't believe Titan's let him go. To the Redskins, Jesus. What's their salary cap look like now?

Can't wait to see what the Jets are gonna do. They seem to be trying to free up a lotta room. No QB and no receivers with likely departure of Coles. Wonder will any of the Ravens LB crew make a move NY side.

How much money do the Foreskins have? They they spunk money all over the place. Hanyesworth is one player who probably will be worth the money though...

according to this they only had 8.1 million to play with
Tampa Bay working with most salary-cap space

On the eve of free agency, some teams are positioned too well, and others not so well. Based on numbers gathered Thursday — and these are fluid, changing with each roster move that each team makes — here are the teams with the most and least salary-cap room heading into the start of free agency.

    MOST
    Tampa Bay — $61 million
    Kansas City — $57 million
    Philadelphia — $48 million
    Denver — $37 million
    Green Bay — $34 million

    LEAST
    Carolina — $1.9 million
    New England — $3.2 million
    Indianapolis — $6.6 million
    Pittsburgh — $7.4 million
    Washington — $8.1 million

    Does not compute!!
Too much by far for Haynesworth. Snyder's back with a vengance. That's probably the end of Jason Taylor and Carlos Rogers. Redskins don't have enough cap (or even close to enough cap for both Haynesworth and Hall). There's gonna be a lot of cuts!

$100 million over 7 years for a guy how only plays 75% of plays!!!! How much more is he earning than their QB Campbell?

If the cap is gone next year its gona hurt the excellant competitive nature of the nfl.

How does Haynesworth get that kind of deal. No full seasons in the last 3 years, anger management issues, play 2 out of 3 downs, takes plays off.

Sounds like the definition of someone who is either gonna underperform or just take the money and skate through the rest of his life.

To answer both your questions because he is a 6 foot 6 320 pound brick wall. Try running up the gut with that in your way. Most O-coordinators would adjust with that brick wall in your way.

The reason he plays a short amount of time on the field is because most huge DT are only used for run stuffing or short yard situations. Haynesworth is a huge asset literally to any team. Probably getting too much money but obviously the Redskins think he is worth it.

The whole "takes plays off" thing is understandable when he's that big, and that effective. Because he doesn't just stuff runs, he gets sacks too. Gotta be realistic in what you ask.

If the Redskins have that money then he deserves it.

They have a lot of high-paid players now though... I hope Jason Campbell steps it up.

Haynesworth should have stayed in Tennesse. With Shawn Springs leaving and Jason Taylor expected to go as well that team won't even have the overall defensive imapct that he had with the Titans.

Historically the Redskins alwas overpay in Free Agency so this doesn't come as any surprise at all...

The Redskins are masters at re-negotiating contracts so they can sign players every off-season. Never helps them but they are great at it

    :D

The point I'm making is not his effectiveness as a player, it's that he's getting paid way more than players in positions that are required to be on the field for 100% of the time not 75%. There's a reason why DTs historically are paid less than DEs, OLBs, CBs, WRs, QBs, OLs.

The Redskins were stupid to spend this kinda money on him no matter how good he is, he will only play 75% of the game. It also looks like no one else was willing to pay that money either.

This reckless spending of money is usually penalised in the NFL because of the cap, so its teams like the Patriots and Steelers how manage their cap well and dont give into reckless pay demands are the ones who suceed. But if the cap is gone after this season we can expect the Redskins and Cowboys and their idiotic owners trying to buy the SuperBowl. The no cap situation will benefit them but it wont let gareenteed them anything. The Cap going could crush a few small market teams which will force them to move to bigger markets. I dont think the cap will completely ruin the competitiveness as the smart teams will still be smart but just at a disadvantage

I agree with you thats why Im glad im not a redskins fan. Desperate teams take desperate measures to obtain players.

A couple of days ago I heard the possibilitiy of a no-cap year being discussed on the NFL network. Adam Schefter and Michael Lombardi now think that it will actually lead to LESS free agent activity as teams(well most teams anyway) will be able to just resign all their veterans. So i think it wont benefit the likes of the Skins and Cowboys that much but I definitely think small market teams could be screwed.
