Hi, I really want to bring some one here for a special meal but have heard it's closing and they aren't taking reservations- is this true?
Also, I am a bit intimidated! Does anyone know how far in advance reservations have to be made, the average price of the bill (I know how much the food is but am worried about the wine menu- is it priced and is it extortionate?) Unfortunately the event is in a just over a week so I don't know if I could get a table

i don't think you'd have any problems getting a table for next week. as for wines, like in a lot of places, the house wine will probably be 20-30 euros, so it depends what you want really. i'd say all in all count around 150 a head (if having 3 courses and half a bottle each).

I've been to Shanahans. Didn't really do it for me.

If you can afford it, the tasting menu down the road in Thornton's is way better. Will cost about €300 each though.

Or dinner in Patrick Guilbaud is great. This will be compareable in price to Shanahans.

    you sure its closing?

8 courses tasting menu @thornton's + wine + coffee is less than 200 per person.

Shenahans is a lot overpriced, and, in terms of cooking, comparing it with thornton's does not make any sense.

I normally go for the 14 courses + wine. But yeah, I'm sure 8 courses is enough for most people. :)

It doesn't make sense to compare two expensive restaurants in terms of the cooking...?

Sorry but that's nonsense, of course you can compare the quality of the food. That's the main product you are paying for.

By all means go to Shanahans, but for roughly the same amount of money you can get better food down the road.

If you want a huge, well cooked, good quality steak at astronomical prices served with very rich, very expensive, very unimaginative sides, by all means go to Shanahans. I've been and the steak is very good. If that's what rocks your boat and you have the money then that's fine.

Personally, if I'm gonna spend alot of money on a meal, I want a little creativity and flair and I want to eat something that I either couldn't cook at home or wouldn't have thought of cooking at home.

I was there a couple of weeks ago (very special occasion) and it certainly showed no signs of closing. In fact, every seat in the place was occupied (what recession?).

I would agree with 'The beer revolution's' summary regarding the place, but don't think I have the equipment (or the quality of meat) to reproduce a similar steak at home, so I definitely think it's worth a once-off visit.

I do think that similar steaks in the US (cooked in the same way) cost around 1/4 of the price (although the beef is grain fed rather than our own high quality grass fed animals). It is one of the best steaks in town, but at around 150 euro a head, it would want to be.

Sorry, what i meant is that Shanahans is a way overrated and it cannot be compared with Thornton's, actually I think that Thornton's is the best restaurant here, even better than Guilbaud. Anyway, I'm not sure that people who are only looking for a steak would appreciate.

The problem with that is that two years ago it was almost half the price and the food was much better.

Thorntons quality has dropped amazingly in the last few years due to Kevins increesingly strange behaviour. He's more into producing pointless photographic books and bizare "proformace" peices which, in his words "use all SEVEN senses".

The man undoubtly has talent and a love of food but he needs to focus more on his kitchen.

If I was going to spend that money there are atleats 5 restarunts in dublin I'd rather give my money to.

Bit of a condecending statement that.

Also, shannahans IS a steak house, its what they specialise in and they make the best steak I've even eaten out in Ireland.

That's wrong, I've been there two years ago and it had the same prices he has today. And, I have to say, it was one of the few restaurants who didn't increase the menu prices during 2005/2006.

I don't know when you visited Kevin's restaurant for the last time, I've been there many times for the last three years because I think that it is the best restaurant in town and the quality of the food was always constant. Once I had problems with a sommelier, but she does not work with him anymore; anyway, sticking on food only, the quality was always amazing.

My last visit was just before Christmas 2008, I don't know if something changed in the meantime

Probably we have different tastes, tastes are subjective, I hope you will enjoy your future meals in these restaurants :-) Can we know the names? It's always a good thing to share places where you can eat well.

Just because I don't want to be totally off-topic, shanahans has probably good steaks but they are clearly overpriced, with the same time you can get a full tasting menu+wine from wonderful restaraunts like Thornton's or l'Ecrivain.

 You sound like one of those people who knows nothing about food and only goes to places like Thorntons so you can brag about it and make the neighbours jealous.

Anyway....if your looking for top quality food at very reasonable prices BANG cafe on Baggot street is superb. Ive never been to Thorntons but I have been to MINT (Im sure its a similar experience) and its just a completely different level altogether. Its an amazing experience for anybody with a love of food/cooking.

Due to past experiences I know Kevin, his menu and his standards better than most.

The prices have gotten higher, tasting menue in 2006 was €115 per person and €155 with wine.

The standards have droped and thats not just my view.
in 2006 thorntons had 2 michellin star, now he is hanging onto one, barely.
Last time I ate there was november, also ate there last april, neither was my choice.

Kevins front of house staff used to be a lot better too, his bropther is a good manager but Gillian was much better and is a massive lose.

As for where I'd rather eat.

Mint, Chapter One, L'Ecrivain and head and shoulders above Thorntons and has been for 20 odd years, Patrick Guilbaud.

In 2006 thorntons was voted one of the top 25 restaurants in the world by a leading publication, today it wouldn't be top 250.

    .

Interesting point, can you please clarify how the food quality has decreased? Which bad experiences did you have? A meat cooked too much? A fish which wasn't fresh?

The food in the pearl brasserie is as good as Thorntons, perhaps not as adventerous. But at less than half the price. Thorntons is criminally overpriced.

You don't know what you're talking about. I've been to the pearl brasserie and the food was not so good, the only good thing was the fresh fish. We also had ravioli and they were cooked in unsalted water (these are the basics...)

the fois gras in Pearl is out of this world, you have to taste the filled of beef, its sooooo good.

I've never had a bad experience in thorntons, the resturant it's self is very well layed out, comfortbale, the music is carp but thats a common thing in most places.

I just haven't felt, for a long time, that their prices are justified.

3 weeks ago I had dinner in Lindasy House in soho, meal for two + wine came to £180. You're talking about paying almost €200 for a tasting menue per person, thats a massive price difference (tasting menu + wine in Lindsay House was £105 per person) and the food in Lindsay is much better than thorntons, its much nicer setting AND the young, friendly and energetic service staff were nice more plesant and helpfull.

It left such a good effect on me that I fully intend on visiting the owners new oyster bar next time I'm eating out in dublin.

Haven't been to Lindsay House but Corrigan's in Mayfair in January was not only one of the best meals I've ever had but probably the best value meal I've had too.
    3 x starter,main, desert coffee.
    3 x Kir Royale.
    1 x Good Burgundy
    1 x Bushmills 16 YO

£225 inc service if my memory serves me well

I couldn't recommend this restaurant enough to anyone visiting London!!

Is that Bentleys by any chance? We were going to go there but we were staying in WC1 and Lindsay House was right beside us so we just went there, best meal I've had for years.

funny thing is that I actually think Corrigan is a bit of a knob, met him a few times and he comes off as very up his own arse but holy sh!te the man is a genius, I had Venison tattar for starters, veal served with veal sweet breads for mains and beetroot cheese cake with goats cheese sorbet for desert, was out of this world.

Back on topic, if you want to eat probably the best steak in western europe then Shannahans is the place to go, easily.
