To my surprise I see that the IRONMAN UK is now sold out.
Last years event didn't sell out as far as I can remember.
Do you think change of venue (2009 to Bolton) and moving it from Sept to Aug is the reasons why it sold out so quickly? Any Boardsies doing it?

There are probably a number of reasons, 3 thank I can think of, off the top of my head

(1)Certainly moving it away from Sherbourne will have helped. It was not a popular location.

(2)IMUK has also been established a couple of years now so the teething problems should have been ironed out now

(3)and there is also the general increase in popularity in IM events so the potential pool of entrants is higher.

I'm not sure the month would make a huge difference, but maybe?

Month makes a big difference if you have kids - in Aug they are on holidays, in Sept they aren't.

I think IM is the new marathon - huge feat of endurance with a mystique that seems tantalisingly out of reach to the average person. Exactly how the marathon used to seem. As the idea of running 26.2 miles seems ever more accessible so more people migrate to ultras, adventure races and IM.

very true, for some reason I had read it as moving from September to August so thought the kids factor won't be valid but now realise it's the other way around...

Agree on the kids bit. As for the new Marathon being the IM.. hmmm perhaps its doing an Olympic Tri or 50k Ultra being the new Marathon. 26.2 to a 26.2 post 3.8k swim and 180k bike is a gulf and a half IMHO

a gulf I wish to bridge someday though...

Sure why not do it this year?

It is doable - HM and I know someone who went from no Tri to IM in 12 months. He'd have been at about your level as well, similar marathon PBs, but wouldn't have as strong a sporty or endurance background as you.

Most of the M-dot races are full for 2009. Could consider a non-ironman corp one though?

Is it just me, or is Amadeus spending a lot of time on a thread with "ironman" in the title

    Can't swim, won't swim remember?!

I'll admit that IM fascinates me. But I'm also fascinated by the weird piercings that people put in obscure parts of thier body. Doesn't mean I'll be shoving bits of steel where bits of steel shouldn't go anytime soon!
