I have a mate who thinks his boss is watching his every move. This friend of mine drives for a living as a sales rep but recently suspects that his boss is following him. His boss phones him up first thing in the morning to see were he is , has he left his house etc...from the questions his boss asks him as well as the tone he suspects his that the boss knows exactly were he is and is trying to catch him out.

How can he know if he is driving, would some sort of gps tracking system be attached to his car/van or mobile phone with out his knowledge that the boss is using.

Even though the boss own the car and mobile ,is this legal and how can he find out if he is being monitored without taking it up with his boss.

I know of a company which put GPS devices into the sales guys company vehicles so the manager could keep "an eye" on the fleet. They were told explicitly about it before it was done.

All a bit needlessly 1984 in my opinion but I can't imagine there's a problem with a company putting such a device in company vehicles so long as they tell the employees about them.

You won't unfortunately be able to get legal advice here, at best we can relate what we've seen ourselves in the private sector. So take everything with a pinch of salt.

If you search Work & Jobs and Work Problems, you'll find a thread from a while back about an employee who found his expenses docked by his employer after they installed GPS trackers in some of the company vehicles. It's become an increasingly cost-effective and common practice with employees only likely to find out about it after the employer decides what to do with the information.
