I was unaware that it was possible to execute code remotly on a computer if you had the admin username and password without setting up some sort of reciever open on the other side.
While setting up sophos i was shown that the server verion had the ability to search for network computers and install sophos on their computer with an admin and password WITHOUT any prior software installed. Can anyone clarify either if i'm misunderstanding the system or the method thats used for this.

I think they mean computers that are on a domain.

so when you're logged into a domain the server you're logged into can execute remote code? the computers on the network i was working on weren't logging into a domain

depends on the domain policy, but yes its a feature, good for large networks so software can be rolled out to users

also if remote desktop is enabled on a pc not in a domain, then somebody with admin admin details can log in and do what they want

The best way to learn about Windows domains is hands on experience backed up with books and articles online, petri.co.il has loads of articles aimed at IT admins working with Server 2003/2008. Also the Administrators companion books by Microsoft would be considered the best source of info if you're willing to invest in them. Just need to get the right book for the area you're studying. For example I'm currently trying to work my way through this but there's a lot of detail in it!

As for your original question, try using PS Tools by Windows guru Mark Russinovich. One of the utilities allows remote process execution, though I'm not sure if that's exactly what you were looking for.

Actually, re-reading your post I see Ghost Trains answer would be more along the lines of what you're looking for!

Not a great idea to use this unless you are on a completely secure network. PsExec transmits passwords in plain text.

    Sophos probably does too...
